Cast your mind back to early 2000. the millenium bug had been and gone. the Millenium dome had impressed a few but left more in no doubt that the cheese and pineapple hedgehog was the source of inspiration. Anyway. the early noughties heralded a new design ethos for motorcycle manufacturers. bulbous was out and sleek new lines reminiscent of 70's sci-fi was in. the Stealth Bomber approach was adopted. lines so sharp you could slice air and time even at a standstill. Motorcycling as a pastime had progressed as well. it still remained the go to choice for to and fro work commuting but travel to far flung places on two wheels was changing. the laborious motorised armchairs and QE2 sized Uber tourers were starting to spawn lighter. lithe progeny. Honda started the trend. as they so often do with the iconic VFR series that put the sport into touring. albeit not quite at an olympic level at first but certainly more active than an armchair commentator. As is so often the case imitation is the fairest form of flattery and so enter stage left the pretender to the throne. the Prince Charles to the Queen. with Italian flair and finesse that. given the year was uncommon with the european interlopers. The Aprilia RST Futura was (is) as the name suggests ahead of its time. with fancy LCD dash. that features clock. fuel gauge. They fitted a single-sided swinger. usd forks and underseat exhaust way before it became the norm and the power was supplied by a slightly detuned Rotax engine that resided in the RSV and Tuono. so with power. poise and grace the RST makes for a left field tourer. one that. if you wish. you could re-enact all manner of Star Trek skits in your helmet. This three owner machine has both its keys and is in superb condition for it's year. It has MOT until July 2015 and with an indicated 8963 miles on the speedo it's barely run in.
