Description

The 1978 BMW R100SRS Motorsport is a very rare and desirable motorcycle. While BMW imported 200 1978 R100RS Motorsports with the full RS fairing the company only imported 50 of the SRS model with an S fairing. The white paint and three-color pin striping are the same as well as the dark blue covered solo (3/4) and dual saddles. This bike comes with both saddles.Rather than making conclusory claims such as "runs great" or "well maintained" I will attempt to provide a thorough background on this bike to provide prospective buyers with the facts that I would want to know. Since 1973 I have owned 15 BMW airheads from the 1960s (8) and 1970s (7) and have done frame off restorations on six of them. I started doing my own restorations after being disappointed with the restorations performed by others.I purchased this bike about five years ago and the following year did a frame off restoration both cosmetically and mechanically. When I bought the bike it was in nice original shape albeit a little faded and it seemed very strong and smooth albeit a little smokey. I believe that I am the third owner based on my conversation with the second owner. While the odometer says that the bike has 20981 miles on it the second owner admitted that he had replaced the original speedo/tach unit which stopped working at about 40000 miles with an operable one that had about 15000 miles on it. Since I have ridden the bike about 5000 miles the current total mileage on the bike is about 45000. The bike has two auxiliary gauges (an oil temperature gauge and an oil pressure gauge) in addition to the standard clock and volt meter and they all work properly. The bike also has a new Brown side stand. The original tool kit is included. The restoration that was performed on the bike entailed no cost-cutting compromises. When in doubt I replaced parts for the long-term benefit of the bike. The top end of the engine was rebuilt with new pistons and rings (one-size over) and a valve job was performed. (I had correctly diagnosed the smokey issue as an engine due for top end work.) The pushrod seals were replaced with new ones and all of the gaskets were replaced. I also replaced the rear main seal clutch plate and clutch spring plate. In doing this work I discovered the reason for the great performance of the bike: a beautifully lightened flywheel. The previous owner indicated that he had the transmission rebuilt by some east coast trans guru and I don't doubt it because it shifts better than any airhead BMW that I have ridden. The final drive (32/11) was in good shape and cleaned and reinstalled. The front forks were rebuilt with new fork tubes (the originals were slightly pitted) and seals. The steering damper was replaced with a new OEM steering damper. The rear shocks are Konis. Two of the three brake rotors were a little below spec and were replaced with EBC rotors in the front. All of the brake pads were replaced. The tires were replaced with Avon Roadriders with new tubes and are in good shape. Actually I recently replaced the rear tire with a new one so tires should not be a concern for some time to come.Cosmetically the fairing tank rear cowls on both saddles the battery covers the front fender were all professionally repainted with the correct Glazurit paint. I purchased both the paint and striping paint from Holt BMW which is famous for its restoration work. The striping was beautifully done based on photos and careful measurements. While I was at it I had a full RS fairing done in the event that I ever wanted to have a regular Motorsport. I never did but it is available for an additional price. I had the frame and frame parts powder coated in gloss black. All of the fasteners were replaces with stainless steel fasteners. I replaced the exhaust pipes and crossover pipe with new ones. The mufflers are original and although they look nice they are showing some typical blistering at the seams. However I didn't believe that the mufflers were quite due for replacement. I have attempted to take up close photos of the bike to give an accurate picture of the bike's condition. While the foregoing discussion may seem tedious to some I believe that it provides the necessary information for respective buyers to make an informed decision on whether to bid on this bike as well as what I anticipate its value to be. My experience has led me to believe that there are many seemingly pretty bikes for sale but unless you know exactly what work has been done with them you are likely to have many costly time consuming surprises in store for you. To the best of my knowledge this bike will have no disappointments. It is a gorgeous motorcycle and runs beautifully.
