I am the third owner of this motorcycle. The second owner, y dermatologist, inally agreed to sell it to me a few years ago after my persistent annual expressions of interest during my routine checkups. I was interested in this particular bikebecause of its important place in BMW's history and the particular background of this motorcycle. In 1977, he R100RS, he first fully faired production motorcycle, eplaced the R90S as the flagship of BMW's line. Although BMW produced the R100RS for several years, ost BMW enthusiasts consider the RS77 to be the most desirable and collectible year for a host of reasons, .g., 0mm exhaust ports, ainted spoke wheels with blue pinstripes, nbsp;blue anodized front calipers, tc. I wasinterested in this particular RS77, ecause of its low mileage (19,775 miles) and the fact that I knew that the second owner meticulously maintained the bike and rode it every year since he bought it in 1981, lbeit for a limited number of miles. In other words, he bike was never abused, idden hard and put away wet in a barn for many years. The bike was also in very nice original condition with few apparent issues needing attention. In order to reassure myself that this RS77 was a true 40/40, measured the exhaust pipes with digital calipers and foundthat they were indeed 2mm wider in the outside diameter than my R90S or my 1978 R100RS. However, s will be discussed below, ost seemingly beautiful BMWs of this period require some predictable and time consuming maintenance work. In this regard,I will attempt to provide a thorough background on this bike in orderto provide prospective buyers with the facts that I have learned are important in assessing thecondition a BMW airhead of this vintage. Since 1973, have owned 15 BMW airheads from the 1960s (8) and 1970s (7) and have performed frame-off restorations on six of them. Accordingly, can fairly state that I have learned a great deal about these motorcycles during this process.
Mechanically, he bike was verysound when I bought it, ut the usual maintenance issues gradually arose one by one. I replaced the rear main seal, nd since it was apart, inspected the clutch plate and spring plate and found that they were slightly below spec. I replaced them with new BMW parts. I have also replaced the pushrod tube seals and all of the top end gaskets. I inspected the top end, nd all was well with only 25,000 miles, o I just cleaned things up. The carbs have been rebuilt. The forks have been rebuilt with new seals and boots and progressive fork springs. Since the front end was apart, installed new fairing fork rubbers. I replaced the rear shocks with IKONs, hich are identical to the now unavailable Konis. The spokes on the original wheels were grungy, o I rebuilt the wheels with Buchanan polished stainless steel spokes. I also had the rims repainted and striped with the correct paint from Holt BMW. For tires, recently put on Avon Roadriders with new tubes. Recently, replaced the battery with a Westco. I also installed a new Brown side stand.
Cosmetically, his bike was in very nice original condition when I acquired it and only needed attention in a few areas. As mentioned above, nbsp;I restored the wheels to beautiful condition. The bike came with a solo (3/4) saddle, nd the rear cowl was severelyscratched from a folding luggage rack. I bought a dual saddle, nd had both cowls repaintedwith the correct Glazurit paint from Holt BMW. Both seat cowls were correctly pinstriped. Both saddles was replaced with BMW saddles at $500 apiece. The bike comes with both saddles. I also had the bag mounts powder coated gloss black.
In providing a detailed description of the work that has been performed on this bike, would like to provide the necessary information to prospective buyers in order for them to make an informed decision on whether to bid on this bike, s well as to understand what I believe its value to be. My experience withthese bikes has led me to the conclusion that while there may be many seemingly pretty bikes for sale, nless thebuyer knows exactly what work has been done with them and when, any costlyand time-consuming surprises are likely to rear their ugly heads. To the best of my knowledge, his bike will provide no such disappointments. During my ownership the bike has been completely dialed in and sorted out. Consequently, t runs and handles beautifully and needs nothing. Everything works as it should. The bike has been ridden every year with frequent oil changes and has been stored in my heated rec room in the winters. The original tool kit is included, s well as the original saddle bags.
