Truly Unique Cruiser: 1998 BMW R1200C Classic with 27,000 miles

About the motorcycle:

This sophisticated, igh-tech machine is a totally original cruiser design. The R1200 C is unmistakably BMW and it shows in every original line and high quality component. It is a startlingly bold and imaginative bike that resembles nothing else on wheels. It’s certainly far removed from any previous or current BMW.

Within two years of its launch, he BMW R1200 C had been voted “Motorcycle of the Year”, r “Cruiser of the Year” in many countries. The ultimate accolade came when the makers of the James Bond movie series – renowned for their love of high-tech, odern products and innovative design – selected the bike for 007 to ride in the 1999 film, omorrow Never Dies. The bike was as spectacular as the action.
The specially tuned and chrome-finished version of BMW’s modern but timeless, our-valve horizontal twin smashes tradition, roving that a cruiser doesn’t have to conform to old-fashioned concepts. The 1170cc, oxer engine is designed to produce more torque at low speed rather than maximum power. Finished expansively in high quality chrome, he big twin delivers 61 bhp at 5,000 rpm, ut equally important is that it produces 70 lb ft of torque at 3,000 rpm - optimizing torque at low engine speeds. This translates as superlative throttle control and excellent response when negotiating city traffic. In addition, ess gear changing is required.
The R1200 C’s copious torque is fed to the rear wheel through a five-speed gearbox, ith dedicated ratios, nd BMW’s proven drive shaft is situated in the hollow swinging arm of the Monolever. It features not only two universal joints, ut also a torsion damper. The single-plate dry clutch is hydraulically operated.
On the open road, he low-stressed, ow-revving engine gives the impression that it is unbreakable. Cruising has never been as easy. The power unit is so independent of high engine speeds that a tachometer is not necessary.
The really amazing quality of this motorcycle is how it holds the road and maintains a line over bad surfaces. It is a quality that is accepted and expected by BMW users and a tradition that continues with the R1200 C.The way a machine copes with bad surfaces is obviously a major factor in motorcycle comfort, ut the R1200 C is the most rideable and comfortable cruiser available, ith a riding position that is the most ergonomic of any cruiser.
Contributing factors that continue to maintain this cruiser’s reputation for excellent road-holding and handling include the famous Telelever front suspension and Paralever-enhanced swinging arm which is mounted on the frame instead of the gearbox. The R1200 C has a much longer swinging arm, alled the Monolever, han other modern BMWs. Because of its low centre of gravity, engthened wheelbase and the above suspension qualities, MW’s radical cruiser has pushed road-holding standards to a new high.Buy it and try it in the twisties.
Because of the seat design and position, he rider sits lower (29 inches) and further towards the rear of the machine. The saddle-shaped seat provides just enough support at the base of the spine to relieve weight on the lower back and the pillion seat also converts to a rider backrest when travelling solo. The footrests have been shifted forward and help to create a seating position between the two wheels that makes long distance travel a pleasure and not a chore. The complete configuration ensures almost perfect balance, ore ease of control and safety.
Optimum brake response and stopping power is vital to a cruiser. The R1200 C is equipped with a large and powerful three-disc braking system with excellent stopping force and feel, nd an adjustable brake lever.

Twin, 2 inch discs are fitted to the front wheel and a single 11 inch disc is at the rear. Brembo four-piston fixed calipers operate the front brake while twin-piston floating calipers activate the rear, nd BMW’s third generation, nti-lock braking system comes on when you really crank on the brakes, nd you stop incredibly fast.
With a 4.6 gallon fuel tank this bike can really travel long distances. A range of up to 200 miles is possible depending on riding style. The R1200 C is a phenomenal departure from cruiser convention but its uniqueness cannot hide the reality that it is one of the best-looking and safest motorcycles on the road. James Bond had some cool cars, ut the R1200C was his coolest set of wheels ever. Everywhere you ride this bike, e prepared for compliments and rubbernecking.

Shows some wear and tear:

I am the second owner. The bike has been always garaged, ut it shows some use after 17 years and 27,000 – mostly Montana - miles. This bike has a replaced drivers seat. The new driver’s seat is brown, ot the original black, lso the kickstand broke during transport and was sleeved and welded a long time ago. Almostunnoticeable. The (second) windshield has some minor scuffs - not bad really. Please see photos. The stock rear passenger seat still folds up and down with the help of a handy bolt – but not the original spring activated mechanism. That’s it for demerits! The bike sports good tires and has had a recent complete fluid change and tune-up. This motorcycle runs great! It has a throaty aftermarket exhaust on it, ut I still have the quieter stock pipes if you would prefer those. I dearly love this bike but I have another similar to it and my garage space is at a premium. Come and get it or I'll bring it to you for a reasonable fee.Call 406-585-5858 to schedule a test ride. For sale on Bozeman Craigslist for only $4400 OBO. The bike is listed on this eBay auction withno reserve, nd it will sell here by September 20, o don’t delay.
