1977 BMW R100S
Two owner bike, hat's been in Colorado its whole life. I purchased this 6 years ago, fter it had sat in a barn for a decade. At the time it had only 29K miles on it. I've gone through the whole bike and it starts and runs like a champ. It was my (fair weather) daily driver for several years, s it now has just under 44K miles.
About the R100S:
- The R100S was one of the four fastest bikes in the World when it was new. (First BMW bike to cover the 1/4 mile in under 13 seconds (12.9 seconds @ 103mph)
- The S models had more aggressive cams, esulting in almost 10% more horsepower and torque than the regular R100/7 models,
- S models are differentiated visually from the regular /7's by the bikini faring and the cafe seat.
- Was the most expensive production motorbike in the World at the time.
- Excellent running order. Starts every time, ust jump on it and ride to South America today... seriously.
- Drives beautifully. It's an absolute joy to arc this thing through mountain curves at spirited rates- very solid and inspiring German engineering.
- No oil leaks. Pushrod tube seals replaced recently, ll fluids renewed.
- Added a Euro Motoelectrics Optical Electric Ignition less than 1000 miles ago.
- Comes with the original Krauser luggage and rack.
- Bing carbs recently rebuilt with new needles, ets and diaphrams.
- Good compression in both cylinders (137psi in left, 35psi on right).
- 5 speed transmission shifts smoothly.
- Matching numbers.
- Upgraded rear suspension with YSS shocks.
- No tears/rips on seat.
The Other:
- The original owner painted it in the early 1980's so it's not the stock paint job. I don't know why he did it, ut it's now a nice red.. But the paint job is pretty patina'ed out and it could use some fresh color. (or rock it as it is- even with the paint, can't park it without someone coming up and gawking at it).
- Tail light was broken when I bought it, o I put an aftermarket LED one on. It's not very pretty but it works.
- Turn signals illuminate, ut they don't 'blink'.
- Clock doesn't work... but that's pretty common for S models...
- Some scratches/cracks on fairing from a 5 mph laydown (parking lot gravel got me once). See last photo.
- Fuel tank could use a re-lining, ut with inline filters I've never had a problem with debris clogging the carbs. There's no rust in the tank (already fixed that), ust some older liner peeling.
The Bottom Line:
This is one of the most classic airheads ever. When I purchased it, was planning on customizing it, ut then I found out how rare and special the S models were, o I didn't dare bastardize it.
But not only is it classic, t can still hold it's own on the open road. Most 'classic" bikes are cool around town.. but you wouldn't want to do a highway/road trip with them. Not the case with this bike- even though it's almost 40 years old, t'll do 100+ mph on the freeway driving over mountain passes all day long (while getting 40+ mpg). And it'll do it solidly. Words just can't express how wonderful this bike is...
Other:
- Mileage may change slightly as the weather's been nice..
- Bike is viewable in downtown Boulder, olorado if you happen to be local.
- Shipping is not a problem, 've shipped several bikes before and it's easy.
- Also for sale locally, o reserve the right to end the auction at any time.
