Custom Build - BMW R100 Deus ex Machina Perfect mix of Old & New: a classic, intage cafe racer vibe with fully modernized, igh performance componentry

This rare, ne-of-a-kind Deus ex Machina custom motorcycle was handbuilt by Michael Woolaway, egendary builder, nd host of Esquire Network's show, rench Against the Machine.

It has been featured in documentary films, andbuilt motorcycle shows, ooks, nd museums, nd lauded as one of a small handful of the most iconic cafe racers of the decade.

How it Rides and Feels

It rides like nothing I've ever been on. It rides aggressive and fun, mazing in the canyons and curvy roads. Yet you can't help but feel the history of the older vintage cafe racer under you. I'm a vintage BMW guy, o I wanted to seek out a late-70's model and see what Deus would do with it. What came out was cool beyond my expectations, nd bridged the old and new. While feeling vintage, t also gets off the line fast, racks curves unbelievably fast and tight, nd stops fast. Best of all worlds

Any chance I can get to escape, rip it up into the canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains around Malibu.

And if you think it turns heads, ou would be correct. You can expect to it to spark conversations with curious admirers at every stoplight and parking spot.

Build Notes

It’s a late 1970’s BMW R100S caf? racer build.

The R100S is a bit of a legendary bike and it’s hard to cut it up so for this project Woolie set out to make something that’s already working really well work differently.

“The inspiration behind this bike was to build something that didn’t look very much like a BMW,” says Woolie. “I tried to change the look of it and to style it around something that was a bit older than the bike was.”

Woolie goes on to describe the build.

“It’s got a big tank and you’re all stretched out, o you really feel like you’re tucked in behind it.”

Compared to the original bike, his build possesses a more aggressive riding position, ut it’s still very comfortable to ride and very smooth with great power delivery.

The frame has been deconstructed—Woolie removed all the brackets, he sub-frame, nd sub-frame mounts and hand built a new chromoly sub-frame.

Evan Wilcox handmade the custom aluminum tank, eat and cowl, hich is then enhanced with water resistant leather and custom stitching from Kushitani. Evan's custom work is so in demand that even Deus was on his waiting list for a year before we could get this made.

The battery has been relocated under the seat with a 1200-degree heat shield protecting it from the engine. The rear brake was converted from a disc to a drum.

Handmade componentry is pretty much everything on the bike: the foot controls, ear sets, ront and rear fenders, eat, ank, rackets, eadlight mounts, rackets, nd tacks.

Friend of Deus, ierre Vallaincourt at Works Performance engineered the rear suspension. The ?hlins forks were shortened and re-valved by Ed Sorbo at Lindemann Engineering. The handlebars, ar mounts, urn signals, nd mirrors come courtesy of all of Deus' partners at Rizoma.

“It’s a fun bike,” Woolie declares. “It’s a bit faster than I actually expected. It’s definitely a one off. There’s only ever going to be one of these.”
