Description

So. it is a painful day indeed. but at long last. I must finally sell my beloved F800GS. Why am I selling?Lots of reasons; first and foremost. I've changed jobs and my new commute is deathly dull (not to mention no quicker) on a bike. Secondly. road riding no longer holds much interest for me. I like the dirt these days and as capable as this is offroad. there are better bikes if dirt is all you want. Thirdly. I've now got a truck so I can move dirt bikes around. so "riding to the trail" is no longer that big a factor for me and I'd prefer something light. Fourth. I've just moved house and need the money!History:I bought it new in the middle of 2009 from the (then official BMW dealer) Bath Road Motorcycles. Despite the lack of first service stamp in the log book. it went back there for its first service (I left the logbook at home and never went back). I used it a lot; lots of touring with my wife. tonnes of business travel and my 420 mile round trip commute (yes. really). At around 20K miles in. I was in a trip in Germany and I foolishly overlooked that those pesky continentals drive on the wrong side of the road. Swerving off the edge of a mountain (okay. it was down a grass bank and it wasn't that steep) to avoid going head on into a car landed me a spell in intensive care and the bike a trip home courtesy of BMW's European recovery service. Back home. it was declared a category D write off. Fortunately. there was nothing seriously wrong with it aside from some damage to the forks. which were replaced with new ones after I bought it back from the insurer. All the repair work was done by BMW (I have all the receipts) and they continued to honour warranty work on it after this. Yes. I know this makes the bike less valuable. even though it has all been fixed. so please say. "NO 1 WANTZ A CAT D M8. GIVE YOU £250 FOR IT. YEH?" Once I got back on the bike. I noticed that pretty much every panel had some minor scuff/ding from its little trip down the road. In many ways. this was a good thing as it gave me the courage to take it offroad. For those who've not been offroad. or who think offroad means driving along a fireroad you'd get a RWD drive car down; This means it has been up the side of mountains. stuck in feet deep snow. ridden through rivers and taken around the Dawn to Dusk practice track. This in turn. means it has been dropped on the floor lots. I have spent a lot of money patching it up. ensuring it runs right and is mechanically sound. but this is not the same as "I've spent a lot of money replacing scuffed bodywork only to scuff it again next week". This bike looks tatty. but it works.  A couple of fasteners on the windshield are missing. It doesn't vibrate without them and it makes replacing the enduro screen with a touring one quicker. so I've never bothered to replace them.  Sidestand switch has been bypassed (IE it doesn't cut out anymore); this is an intentional modification which stops it from stranding you miles from anywhere when you hit it on a rock in a river crossing.  About 2500 miles ago. the Scottoiler packed up. I was no longer doing really high mileage by this stage. so I've just lubed the chain manually with engine oil and chain wax since then.  More recently. the electrics started playing up it went back to BMW for this and touch wood. since it came back from them last week has been fine. As it was with them and they had it so long [due to the recent recall work they were tied up with. they couldn't look at it for two months]. the MOT lapsed. Unfortunately. they took a less liberal interpretation of the MOT rules than my old garage (who had MOT'd it the previous 3 years) and failed it for three things:1. Excessive free play in front brake lever. This is simply because I have put fold up aftermarket levers on and they lack the 'pre-tensioning' spring of the OE ones. I still have the OE BMW front lever. switching that back in eliminates this. 2. Peeling of the chrome in the headlight reflector. I suspect this is due to my HID. Rest assured. the HID is so bright that you don't notice the fact that the reflector chrome is peeling when you're actually using it to light the road in front of you. 3. A slight ding in the front rim (shown in one of the pictures). I have ridden extensively with BMW's offroad school and seen (and ridden) F800GSs with rims a lot worse than this. If you have ever been near the offroading world. you'll laugh and consider it a non-issue. It's fine. really. I damaged it about 20K miles ago and since then have had the bike flat out. jumped it onto rocks. etc. with no problems. It will not suddenly explode. it doesn't cause the wheel to 'thrum' or weave at high speeds or anything like that. You genuinely do not notice it when riding the bike. A more sympathetic garage would pass it (and has).  Why haven't I fixed it myself and got an MOT put back on it? I've moved house. I don't know the local 'understanding' garages and I won't recoup the £350 it'd cost for a brand new front rim and the £200 it'd cost for a headlight reflector in a proportionate increase in resale value. I really don't have the inclination to spend the time necessary trawling the breakers yards and fixing them myself and I don't have enough leave left to take time off work to sort it all out. The past 25K miles have been lots of greenlaning. some touring with the other half on the back and a bit of commuting. Generally it has been a very reliable bike aside from needing a new clutch at around 35K and two instance of electrical problems which required it to go back to BMW. I have had it serviced (in general. more frequently than the advised service history) at Cardiff Motorrad and Riders BMW. I have full service history. all the paperwork. V5. owners manual. both keys (and the third 'plastic') key. Bike has never been stolen. is HPI and finance clear etc. The only 'nasty surprise' is the aforementioned Cat D status. It had a major service last year (lots of new parts. new battery. etc. ) and has hardly been used since. the bike is definitely a 'runner' and the engine is sweet; no coughs/hiccups or out of the ordinary rattles. Why would you want to buy it?-You saw Ewan and Charley and have always fantasised about touring the world by bike. but lacked the guts to do it. Here is the opportunity to buy a bike that looks like it has and you can just tell people you did. without having to do all that nasty and dangerous riding. -You have considerably more free time and fewer scruples than me and are well informed enough about the resale value of even tatty F800GSes and have clocked that you could make a small fortune by buying this. putting it back to stock and selling it as. "A well loved bike. only 2 owners from new" to some poor unsuspecting sap. -You have a nice bike you want to keep pristine and need a cheap. comfortable and reliable winter hack. -You have a lovely new GS that you've always meant to take off road. but haven't wanted to bang it up. Buy this and have the best of both worlds!-You have another F800GS and want the trick bits and a cheap 'spares' bike. -You want a GS and are savvy enough not to pay three times what this will go for another five year old bike. just because it has a few miles on the clock and scrapes in the paint. -You want to look like you've ram-raided Touratech. but lack the fifteen grand it'd cost you to spec a brand new F800GS like this. For the avoidance of doubt:In case it is not obvious from the rest of the listing. this bike has had a rather rough upbringing. This particular video is of me on someone else's bike (always the fastest kind). but I have done exactly this sort of thing on this bike: https://www. youtube. com/watch?v=lMtzZE58AEITo reiterate; the bike does not have an MOT and it has numerous minor bits of damage. Test Rides:If you want to take it out for a quick spin up the road. that is between you. the police and your insurance company once the full agreed asking price and your driving licence are being held in escrow by me. Collection/Delivery:I will not deliver the bike. It will only leave my possession once you (or an agent acting on your behalf) has paid for it in full and signed a receipt that confirms they have received the bike in the condition that I have described it in here and consider the deal done. Once you've won the auction. we can arrange a mutually-convenient time for you to collect it. Please note: I will be away the first weekend after the auction ends. so please let me know ahead of time if you have to collect it then and we can make arrangements. Terms and Conditions:I am a straight shooter. I have been honest about the bike and will be clear and honest in my dealing with you. I have listed it for 1p. If it ends up only selling for 10p. I won't make up some nonsense about it having been stolen. I'll act like an adult. honour the legally binding contract I've entered into. take the loss on the chin. curse myself for not setting a reserve and let you take the bike for that price. I expect the same sort of honest behaviour in return. In order that we both have a pleasant transaction. please read the whole listing carefully. If you have questions that I've not answered in the listing. or want to propose some sort of arrangement that deviates from what I've stipulated. please contact me and discuss *before* you bid. Thank you!-----Scammers: I fight fraud for a living and am very successful at it. Do not even bother trying. Tire Kickers: I've been scrupulously honest in describing the bike. Don't come to my house once you've bought the bike and try and knock the price down because. "Oh I didn't notice in the auction description that there was a scuff on the left hand guard. " I'll tell you to go forth and multiply and leave negative feedback. If you want to look at it or are unsure. the protocol is that you do this before you buy it. :P
