Description

If you are looking at this advert then you probably know what a BMW R100 GS is all about. Quite simply. it is the real ultimate Adventure motorcycle that is ready to cross continents. If this bike could talk it would be booked for the next Horizons Unlimited meeting to be a presenter! This actual bike has already done one Round-the-World trip and is now ready for its second lap. Of course. you don't have to circumnavigate the globe. but it is nice to know that the machine has the full genuine ability to do so. The bike is fitted with the Touratech 43 litre plastic/nylon tank to give a tremendous range of over 400 miles. This is useful when you ride across the Sahara and then after 362 miles you a fuel station that only has diesel (don't ask me how I know. ). Alternatively it simply gives you the option of stopping when and where you want to stop even if that means riding on to the next Tescos as its  a few pence a litre cheaper. :) These tanks cost a mere £910 from Touratech and that is unpainted. By the time you allow for painting it. this is a £1. 00+ extra. You will also see from the photos that it has the upgraded Ohlins shock absorber 46 DRS with rebound damping adjuster and remote spring pre-load adjuster. This shock is in excellent condition and comes complete with the Ohlins Owners Manual. These retail at almost £800!The custom dash includes a Vapour Trail Tech computer which obviously comes complete with full User's Manual. The head light/fairing is a quality item from Simpson-Detour which gives an excellent spread of light and is vastly superior to the standard BMW spec. `You will note that this bike is NOT 100% as it left the BMW factory in 1992. Sorry to disappoint the purists. but this is because it is BETTER with the various improvements that have been made to it over the years. This bike has had a vast fortune spent on it in recent years to ensure that it is virtually as good as new. Not cosmetically. this is a real world machine. not some pampered garage queen that has been made to look pretty. It has had EVEYTHING done to it that needed it. I have a file as thick as a telephone directory showing invoices from all the major BMW shops shops such as Scriminger Engine Developments. Motorworks. James Sherlocks etc etc to prove that £000s have been spent and every area of the bike comprehensively refurbished. Please see photo of just some of the invoices to show that everything has been done to this bike including a full engine rebuild with all new parts around 20k miles ago. For the last seven years. I have hosted the annual Gentleman's Airhead Weekend here in Devon. This involves anything up to 50 Airheads BMWs who converge on my massive workshop to fettle their bikes. Many of the finest and most respected Airheads mechanics have laid their experienced hands on this bike with the result that it is in exceptionally fine fettle. I have owned literally dozens of Airhead BMWs over the last 30 years and I can honestly say that this is one of the best I have ever ridden. It always starts first time no matter how long it may have sat. It is undoubtedly the most powerful 1000cc Airhead I have ridden and feels every bit as powerful as my R1100GS. Even though it only has a single front disc. it has exceptionally good brakes which work. Most other Airheads I have owned have had dreadful brakes but this one really works. The suspension is excellent and again actually works in the real world. both on and off road. Even the gearbox on this bike is sweet and much smoother than any other. It clicks through the gears unlike any other Airhead. Of course it comes complete with decent rugged panniers which proudly display various battle scars which it has collected during its adventurous life. Mileage? OK. it may have more miles than the recently decommissioned Space Shuttles. However. these bikes really do go on for ever if properly serviced and maintained. I have good friends who have similar bikes with 250k miles up still going strong. The true mileage is around 110K. That may seem high to some. but please remember two very important points. Firstly. this bike has had a full rebuild of everything including engine. gearbox. drive shaft and electrics so is ready to clock up another 100K with ease. Secondly. that is the true mileage unlike many other old Airheads that are advertised as "low mileage" that have amazingly "lost" some miles over the years. I have seen old bikes of mine being offered for sale and amazingly they have "lost" over 50k miles after I sold them! I am an honest seller and prefer to tell it like it is. OK. if it's so damn good. then why am I selling it? Good question. Well firstly. I have a R1100GS that I use for long distance road work. Secondly. I'm in the process of building a very radical off-roader based on an Airhead but with an Africa Twin front end and a KTM based rear end! This Airhead is too good to mess around with so I want to keep it in its Adventure spec for someone else to enjoy. Included with the massive pile of paperwork are the MOT certificates for the last 15 years. I will put a new MOT on it this week so it will have a full 12 months from now. The invoices shown in the picture are only about half of the detailed history I have for this bike. I doubt if there exists anywhere another R100GS with as comprehensive a history as this bike. It really is unique and you will not find another one as good as this one.
