Description:

In 1977 BMW introduced the /7 models adding the R80/7 and replacing the R90 and R90S models with updated machines the R100S and the fully faired R100RS. a fully faired machine both were fitted with the new 1. 00cc R100/7 engine. A period review described the R100S as a favourite as both a Tourer and a daily work horse and the R100/7 engine as at home on the motorway as it is in city traffic a second stating that while the R100S has been changed from the R90 ?ˆ?it remains completely a BMW fast. quiet. comfortable very expensive and utterly unique. ?ˆ™

This particular machine is in beautiful condition. we believe it has undergone some sympathetic restoration; it is correctly finished in BMW Ocean Blue (Motorsport Blue). We have given the bike a short test ride and it runs and rides every bit as good as it looks. A full assessment of condition is provided below.

Cosmetic

Cosmetically the bike is in very good order; we believe that the paintwork has been refinished in the correct BMW Ocean Blue (Motorsport Blue) and in the correct striping added. there is some slight overspray on the preserved original sticker under the seat that provides a sign that this part at least has been refinished. The petrol tank is in excellent condition with no dents or damage and is clean internally. the side panels are in similarly good order as is the rear mudguards. the only point of note in respect of the paint set is a small paint scrape on the front right hand edge of the front mudguard. this was caused in transit.

The exhaust system is in very good condition. the chrome is clean and bright as can be seen in the photographs. The seat is in similarly good order the cover has no splits or holes and the base is in good solid order.

Mechanical

The engine starts easily on the electric start; the battery is showing its age and needed the support from our slave battery to spin the big boxer into life. The bike ticks over very smoothly and is mechanically very quiet with no indication of any mechanical issues. once warmed we gave the bike a short test ride and it runs and rides very well the engine revs cleanly and pulls well.

Again the photographs show how clean the engine is with no indication of the bike being dropped or scraped. All of the gears select smoothly and cleanly and the clutch works as it should.

The only very minor issue to report is that the right hand carb does drip indicating that the float height needs adjustment or the float valve needs cleaning or worst case replacement an easy. low cost fix.

There are no indications of any issues in the drive train.

Chassis

The frame is undamaged and the paint is in very good order. with only some very minor marks for those who are picky. The swinging arm is in similar condition. there is no sign of play in the the swinging arm. headstock and wheel bearings.

On the suspension side the forks are clean. damping is effective and the action is smooth. The shock absorbers are again clean and working well. the damping is good. The front and rear brakes are both working.

The wheels rims are both in good order and again the rims are clean and bright. tyres are showing their age and are age cracking so will need replacement. The instruments are the correct original items. in good cosmetic condition and working well. please note the speedometer and odometer are in kilometers so the recorded mileage is 6. 76 miles. we cannot confirm whether this is accurate.

Electrical

The headlight is working on both high and dip beam and the tail light is working well. the brake light is working on both the front and rear switches. The indicators are working well as is the horn. The original switchgear is in good condition and undamaged.

Summary

This motorcycle is in beautiful condition. cosmetically this can clearly be seen in the pictures provided and it has clearly been well cared for and maintained over the past 35 years. We suspect it has seen some light restoration. if so the work has been completed very well and maintained originality as far as possible as there are few indications other than the exceptionally clean condition.

We have not identified any mechanical issues. the engine is exceptionally quiet mechanically and the bike runs and rides very well. All in all this is a beautiful example of a very sought after and useable classic motorcycle.
