Description

I bought this bike in July this year from North Cornwall Motorcycles. I'm a committed boxer fan. and have owned and maintained many BMW "airheads" and "oilheads" over the last thirty eight years. I currently have three. an R1100RT. an R1100GS and a R1200RT. I bought the 1100RT as although I have done many miles on my 1200RT. I have a real soft spot for the simplicity and ease of maintenance of the R1100 models. with their conventional braking systems without the added complexity of the servos BMW added to the R1150 and 1200 models. I have decided three bikes is two too many. so I'm keeping the GS. and selling the two RTs. Since July I have gone over the whole bike and replaced a large number of parts to get the bike up into good mechanical order. Here is a list of everything that has been done:The Good Stuff:New alternator drive belt fitted just before I bought itCleaned front brake calipersFitted a complete set of front and rear Goodrich stainless steel brake hoses Fitted a new rear brake disk with new padsReplaced the rear caliper with an overhauled second hand part in good condition. and fitted a new pad pinFitted new spark plugsReplaced the rear universal joint in the drive-shaft with a second hand part in good conditionReplaced the final drive pivot bearingsReplaced the gear position indicator switchReplaced both lower throttle cablesCleaned both throttle bodiesFitted an LED sidelight bulbFitted a NEW GIVI top box mount frame and plate to fit a GIVI Monokey top box of your choice - These are great top boxes that are easy to remove. while fitting securely. Fitted a new gear lever rubberFitted used OEM shocks front and rear. with the rear unit complete with pre-load virtually unusedFitted a second hand chrome replacement silencer. ith a brand new clamp. again virtually as new. Changed all oils. and filtersFitted a new oil sight glass as the original was slightly cloudySet the tappetsFitted quickly detachable couplings to the fuel lines making the tank much easier to removeBalanced the throttle bodies with an electronic balancerFitted a brake pedal extenderCleaned and checked everything front to backThe fairing is in excellent condition. with glossy Glacier Green paint. I have fitted some stainless bolts around the bike. The panniers are in good condition. with working locks using the same key as the ignition. In all I have spent over £1000 buying new or replacement parts. Faults and the things that I would do next if I kept the bike:There is some surface rust on the frame under the fairing panels and seat which needs some Hammerite - An easy job. Some engine paint has flaked off as is very common on these bikesThe Telelever could do with repainting if you are a perfectionistThe seat has a couple of small flaws in the coverThere is one small area of damaged paint. just below the BMW badge at the front right of the bikeThe bike rides. ticks over. starts and stops very well. The engine is quiet and smooth with no abnormal noises. The gearbox and clutch all work smoothly. with all gears functioning normally. and there is no indication of clutch slip. The ABS. electric screen and heated grips also work perfectly. as does the rider information display. Tyres are good with plenty of tread left as can be seen from the photos. There is the BMW original toolkit and a bulb set under the seat. My last R1100RT had done over 85000 miles when I sold it. and rode like new. so 53812 is a low mileage for one of these bulletproof engines. I had intended to keep this bike. but then I went and bought a Kalahari yellow 1997 R1100GS. and I need to simplify my life. so the RT has to go. There is a fat file of documents with the bike. with lots of MOTs to evidence mileage. all the invoices for the parts I have fitted. and an original owners manual.  There is no detailed service history. although the documents suggest that at some point a BMW enthusiast owned the bike and did his own maintenance. The bike is taxed until the end of March 2015. and the MOT expires Feb 27th 2015.  There is a very reasonable reserve in place on the auction. which will run to the end. You are welcome to come and view the bike just outside Horsham. West Sussex. by arrangement.  It's ready to tour and provide many more miles of great riding entertainment. I would like the winning bidder to pay a £100 deposit via Paypal within 48 hours of the end of the auction. with the balance in cash on collection. I am also prepared to deliver the bike to within  a 30 mile radius of Horsham for the cost of the petrol by arrangement.
