1981 BMW R80g/s. 53. 67 miles. 3rd owner. many records since new. Last 7 of vin# 6362181. Bike located near Pittsburgh. PA. Due to other responsibilities in life I need to put my cherished g/s on the market. I’ve owned it for the last 14 years and it’s been great but the time has come to let it go to a good home.
Background:
Arrived at Cycles Fairfax (Virginia) on Feb 27. 1981 and formal delivery took place on March 3. being sold new to a 47 year old computer consultant. Bike was kept until January 3. 2000 when it was sold with approx 10. 00 miles to the consultant’s friend in Ashburn. Virginia. I purchased the bike on August 14. 2001 with 12. 64 miles. The g/s has always been garaged at my home in Pennsylvania but it has also been ridden year round (conditions permitting). Big trips include 10. 00 miles around the U. S. in summer 2006. This journey was mentioned in Peter Egan’s Leanings column (Time Travel) in Cycle World October 2006 issue. I was humbled to see it included again in Peter’s most recent anthology Leanings 3. Another run was 3. 00 miles round trip to Nova Scotia this past May (2014). There is a story on this in November’s BMW MOA magazine. On the Road with Unc 1i. page 114. The remainder of use was just riding around Pennsylvania and a few times to Washington. DC.
Bike’s service history and condition:
2nd owner installed Works rear shock (a $529. 00 part) around 10-11. 00 miles. At 14. 00 it received an updated clutch and other service at Bob’s BMW in Jessup. Maryland. (When I worked in the DC area. I would take to Bob’s from time to time for service). Other service work over the years was done at a Bimota/Ducati shop near my home and/or by me. I added the Paris/Dakar tank and black seat around 2002. The bike has always been regularly serviced and regularly used. It is mostly original save for tank. seat. and rear shock. The factory BMW cases were added in 2006 and are in great shape (ignition key matched to case locks – separate key for lock at rear of seat). I have spares of all keys including for Krypto disc lock. The BMW tool kit is complete. Service information includes a Haynes Manual. a factory BMW microfiche manual that BMW corporate sent to the first owner. and an original NOS owner’s book in almost perfect shape.
Cosmetics:
Bike is very clean for its age but has various dings and scratches from age and use; small scrape on lower right side valve cover from slow speed 5 mph fall on gravel/dirt road about 8 years ago ( pair of extra valve covers included with sale). Some surface rust on exhaust collector and inner side of muffler. As stated earlier. bike has always been a RIDER.
Current needs:Oil leaks at return tubes and oil pan gasket? Including new pan gasket with sale.
Charging system weak/not working. I am not good with electrical diagnosis but have a new diode board and rotor included with sale. Was thinking maybe voltage regulator needed? All electrical components on bike are original. Battery new in spring 2014. I’ve been using charger when I want to take bike on local rides.
Two small splits in right side front fork boot rubber.
Horns sound weak.
Rear tire due.
Spares:
Aside from the previously mentioned valve covers and electrical components. other spares include two clutch cables. misc throttle cables. various bulbs. left side (used) side cover. extra tire tubes. Touratech work light. cylinder head wrench. and a period BMW battery charger that the original owner had. (extra black seat and side case racks available separately)
