1955 AJS 18CS. 500cc Competition Scrambler. with lights & V5C
Here is an awesome and rare 1955 AJS Competition Scrambler. This rare model has been re-imported from the USA and registered in the UK.
It starts easily (genuine competition magneto) and sounds great. It really goes well. it has so much more go than the standard road going version. Probably comp cams . higher comp piston and lighter weight all contribute to this.
The lightweight all alloy motor & 2 gall alloy tank make the bike less top-heavy than the road going version and therefore the handling. especially noticeable at slow speeds. is drastically improved. You can turn this bike around on a sixpence !
Brakes are reasonable. Gearbox & clutch are all good.
No speedo or drive box is fitted and some kind of bobby-dodging version maybe required to make the bike road legal.
Unusually for the comp bikes this one has been fitted with a full lighting kit & dynamo. This is charging well and the lights are good.
It has also been geared up for road use.
The bike comes with V5C document. registration 121UYG. frame number 5609C. engine number 55/18S 1842C. These are the original factory stampings and it is believed that the engine & frame were together from new but this cannot be verified. There is an AJS & Matchless Owners Club dating certificate.
The V5 states declared manufacture 1955 so the bike is pre-60 MOT exempt and eligible for historic class (free) road tax.
Cosmetically the bike is generally a bit scruffy. There is evidence of “over-chroming” as was the norm in USA. That said. the paint on the frame appears to be the original enamel and it is in sound condition if a little dull. The genuine alloy petrol tank looks sound but the paint is peeling in places. There is no fin damage on the engine. The seat is in poor condition. Exhaust is serviceable and the front down-pipe looks like it would clean up very well.
Front rim is a nice Dunlop 21”. It has good chrome that would clean up very well indeed. Spokes are clean dry & rustless. front tyre is very good / hardly used Dunlop Trials Universal. Rear rim is also a very good genuine Dunlop that would clean up nicely. though the chrome looks a little duller than on the front wheel.
Rear tyre is also Dunlop Trials Universal.
So if it’s an interesting and rare ride-restore AJS Scrambler you’re looking for this could be the perfect machine! A relatively easy project to return to the road “as-is” or ideal for full restoration.
Don’t miss this all-alloy genuine AJS 18CS! (There's a lot of replicas about - but this is the real McCoy!!)
