Description:

A video of this machine can be seen at the following link: http://youtu. be/efNsB-8C3cg

The Rocket 3 was the last motorcycle developed and sold by the BSA marque. the BSA Rocket 3. and its sister machine the Triumph Trident. nbsp;were created to meet the demands of the US market and its demand for increased capacity. the 750 cc push rod triple was smoother and more powerful than the parallel twins that had been the staple of the British industry for 35 years. The two machines were very similar. the primary differences were that the Rocket had an A65 style double-loop cradle frame versus the Trident single down tube and the barrels on the rocket were canted forward at an angle of 15 degrees where the Tridents were upright.

Despite BSAs racing success sales did not meet expectations and the Trident significantly out sold the BSA. this led to the Rocket 3 having a much shorter production run than the Triumph. although a twist of irony saw the Rocket 3 live on in perhaps the most famous factory custom. the Craig Vetter designed Triumph Hurricane

Cosmetic

This motorcycle is in beautiful cosmetic condition with very few marks or blemishes it has clearly seen a level of restoration work. but this work has been carried out to a high standard and done with great sympathy for the machine as it retains many of its original parts.

All of the paint work has been refinished. the tank has no dents or damage and is in excellent condition. the side panels are in similarly excellent condition with just a very small chip on the top of the right hand panel. The mudguards are in good shape. both are very solid with no damage to report.

The seat is in good condition there are no splits in the cover and a good solid base. The 'ray gun' exhaust system. which is so much a part of the character of these machines and responsible for producing that famous triple howl. is in great shape. there is a small shallow dent at the rear of the right hand silencer. but it is very minor and personally I would not consider changing the silencer as for me the beauty of the originality far outweighs the small amount of damage. The original Jones rims are in remarkable condition. in my experience most suffer a level of corrosion regardless of how well they have been kept. the rims on this machine are exceptionally clean.

Mechanical

The bike starts easily and runs beautifully. it ticks over very smoothly at 1. 00 rpm as can be seen in the video. the bike pulls well and there are no indications of any mechanical issues at all. The engine cases are clean with no damage and there are no signs of the bike being crashed or dropped.

The clutch works well and the gears select cleanly and smoothly. we have test ridden the bike and the drive train was faultless.

Chassis and Cycle Parts

The chassis and cycle parts are in good order.

The frame is undamaged and the paint very clean. The twin leading shoe front brake is working well as is the rear brake. The forks are clean and in good order. the action is smooth and the damping effective. The rear shocks are in good order and is damping well.

The bike is fitted with the original airbox.

Electrical

The headlight is working well on high and dipped beam and the rear light is working. the brake light is not working and that will require investigation. the bike is not fitted with indicators and the horn is not working. The instruments are original and in good cosmetic condition. the rev counter is working well but the speedo needle spins so this instrument will need repair.

Summary

This is a beautiful example of BSA's last motorcycle it is in lovely condition. while the frame and engine numbers do not match. the production dates are April and March 1969 respectively. the bike is in beautiful cosmetic condition and mechanically excellent and I am sure will give the new owner a great deal of pleasure. An hour with a spare bulb or perhaps a brake light switch and a fix to the speedo should have this old girl ready for a summer to remember and all set to one of the motorcycle worlds greatest soundtracks.
