A BSA Bantam 175cc D175 with a four speed gearbox. It has just been taxed and the MOT will run until 8 February 2016. The bike seems to be original including the seat. The BSA motif is rather faded on the rear face of the seat but it is visible. I have done a reasonable mileage on the bike including a tour of Belgium. The paintwork is not as presentable as it appears in the photographs and would benefit from attention. I have touched up any poor spots with blue Hammerite so the colours do not match but it has stopped the corrosion. The front mudguard could use some attention as there is a crack on the front upper surface (see photo)The chrome on the wheels is just about respectable on the front but there is evidence of pitting and rust. The rear wheel chrome is in poor condition. The chrome on the tank panels looks good and as are the handlebars. The levers are largely good but there is some rust and pitting. Mechanically it sounds OK and the gears all work and nothing jumps out of gear. The exhaust pipe was corroded and has been cleaned up and painted with heat resistant paint. The silencer had a loose baffle which has been welded and it has had the caustic soda treatment so it is clean internally. The gear foot pedal selector spring is a bit weak between third and second on the way down and I compensate for this by taking the slack upwards in the lever before changing down into second. This works every time and I did not want to get involved in fitting a new spring. The wiring all works for MOT purposes but it is poor in places and a new loom would be a good move. The system does not appear to charge and I do not know if it is the rectifier or the alternator or both. Electrics are a mystery to me so I just kept the battery charged and put in the miles. The speedometer is not working.
It has the potential to be a very nice bike. Being a late model and a D175 it has a four speed box so it goes rather well and has been very pleasant for touring purposes. The Bantam would be ideal for some of the new runs being introduced in Scotland for lightweights ( up to 250cc) including the Scottish Tiddler Tootle on 24 May. the Blue Haze Run on 19 April and the Rock 'n' Roll Run on 20 June all organised by the VMCC.
