1956 HARDING

TWO-WHEEL STEERING TRICYCLE

Just add a Cyclemaster to create

. THE WORLD'S MOST STUPID MOTORISED TRICYCLE!

This quirky tricycle only requires new tyres to put it on the road.

It's a wonderful ?ˆ?white elephant?ˆ™ vintage vehicle. ie it's not particularly stable when you ride it.

In theory. two wheels at the front should make a tricycle easier to ride. But when the wheels are small. as in this contraption. they are more affected by adverse road conditions ?ˆ“ ie you need to hold on tight if you hit a rock.

Also. unless the machine is well-maintained. there?ˆ™s a danger of the steering jamming at full travel. Of course. all these adversities add up to its ?ˆ?white elephant?ˆ™ status and make it very collectible seventy years later.

Taking into account the above information. Harding Ltd of Bath decided to turn this already unsteady contraption into the most dangerous vehicle ever built . by adding an engine!!!

Unwary tricyclists could now proceed at a pace exceeding pedalling speed. with the assistance of a Cyclemaster engine in the rear wheel.

I purchased this tricycle some time ago ready to fit a Cyclemaster into the rear wheel. But I've been so busy with the Online Bicycle Museum display bikes that I've not got round to doing it.

So I am now offering a fellow enthusiast the opportunity to do it instead. It simply must be done! Without a doubt. the world needs another crazy motorised tricycle creeping unsteadily around the roads.

As you can see. this Harding 'TWS' (Two-Wheel Steering) is fitted with two sets of brakes. But one will disappear when the rear wheel is replaced with a Cyclemaster - though earlier Cyclemasters have a back-pedal brake.

A more practical option would be a Minimotor or Powerpak over the rear wheel. in which case you'll retain both brakes. However. a Cyclemaster was the original fitting.

Cyclemaster engine/wheel units are easy to find on ebay. I am NOT including a Cyclemaster in this sale. just the perfect tricycle for motorisation.

You can see one of my previous creations in this youtube video. I sold it a few years ago to a museum abroad.

Again. to make it quite clear. the one in the video is NOT the item for sale in this ebay auction. just an illustration to show you how it's done -

R. A HARDING (Bath) Ltd

19. Lower Bristol Rd. Bath. Avon

R. A. Harding was based in Bath. well-established pre-war as a manufacturer of ?ˆ?bath chairs. ?ˆ™ The company was established in 1921 by Mr. J. Gordon and Mr. E. Loxley. For the company. they used the maiden name of Mr. Loxley?ˆ™s wife.  In the early years. they made a greater variety of invalid carriages than any other manufacturer. By 1930 they offered eight different models. They built invalid carriages for the government during WW2. but found it hard to compete with AC when that company moved into the market. Their motorized tricycles ceased production by the early 1950?ˆ?s. though their tricycle range continued.

Like Kendrick of Reading. they also dabbled with TWS (Two-Wheeled Steering) tricycles. though the Harding models had 18?ˆ? front wheels. In the Magic Wheel magazine of July 1954. they announced their new Harding ?ˆ?Model C?ˆ™ TWS tricycle with a Cyclemaster engine fitted.
