This classic Japanese motorcycle has very low mileage (12,200 miles /19,500 km) and is in excellent condition as can be seen from the photographs. It was imported into New Zealand from Japan approximately 8 years ago and has not been restored although some work has been completed to improvereliabilityandroad worthiness. This includes new period Dunlop K70 tyres, azon electronic ignition and coils, nd overhaul of the carburetors.
This model has the drum front brake which looks more 'period' than the later disc brake model, nd the pads have very little wear. The chrome on the rims is flawless both inside and out, he tank has no dents and the paintwork is near flawless. The seat cover has a small tear at the front wear it adjoins the tank, nd both the side cover and oil tank have had handtouch-ups to conceal paint damage. The handlebars aren't original, hey're a more modern bend manufactured by Venturer. The mirrors are possiblyafter-marketalso, nd the switchgear (certainly on the LH side) appears to be from a later model bike.
The exact year of manufacture may be 1971, ut KHI were unable to confirm this and so the local certifier for road registration made a determination that the model year is 1972.
The Kawasaki W1 is based heavily on the post-war, re-unit, 50cc vertical-twin BSA A7 design inherited from Meguro and features a 360 degree crankshaft which gives it that typical British twin exhaust note. The gearbox is pre-unit (very rare for a Japanese motorcycle) with 4-speeds, nd has a cross-over gear change shaft through the swingarm pivot putting the shift lever on the LH side and reversing the shift pattern to up=up/down=down.
