For Sale BSA B40

Stock Number 664

Frame Number: B40 7428

Engine Number: B40 5927

Model Year: 1964

Description.

BSA developed the 350cc B40 by increasing the bore of the C15s from 67mm to 79mm to give a capacity of 343cc. this was always a machine designed to be sturdy and reliable as the lowly compression ratio of 7:1 indicates. It was the simple reliability of these machines that made them the ideal choice as a replacement for the military M20 or in the civilian world a daily commuter. Fast forward half a century and the same little Beesa provides a magical experience lazily doff doffing along at fifty miles per hour through the summer English country lanes.

This particular B40 is best described as being in lovely rideable condition. it is certainly not concourse but it has certainly had a significant amount of time and money lavished upon it in the recent past. The BSA frame and engine numbers of the time were not identical but both fall within the correct range for 1964 model year. This bike is in good order both cosmetically and mechanically it runs well with no signs of any mechanical issues. a full assessment of condition is provided below.

All of the paint work has been refinished in a close match for the original BSA blue and it suits the machine very well. The tank has no dents or damage the chrome panels are in good order although the original chrome is starting to show its age if examined closely. this is in keeping with a motorcycle that was clearly restored to be ridden and enjoyed. The oil tank and side panels are in similarly good order with no dents or damage and the same applies to the rear mudguard. The front mudguard does have a couple of minor paint scrapes on the very front although the mudguard itself is not damaged. I would say these are storage marks where the guard has rubbed on a wall or something similar.

The exhaust system is in good order. there is a mark where the kick start just catches it. this will need a minor tweak to restore some clearance. The wheel rims are in good order. they have been powder coated rather than chromed.

The engine runs well. as with any big four stroke single it can take a few kicks to get the bike fired up. but we suspect a good service and a new battery would work wonders there. We have taken the bike for a short run around by our showroom and it rides well. the gears select cleanly and the clutch works as it should.

We are not aware of any issues with the drive train. aside from a small drip of oil that appears under the bike when it is left standing. this is not a cause for concern but really is very common with bikes of this era.

The frame is in good condition having been refinished. The suspension is in good order. the forks are in good order. the action is smooth and damping effective. there is a dink in the left hand fork seal holder this is purely cosmetic and does not affect operation. The rear shocks appear to be new replacement items.

The brakes are both working as they should. these machines always require a level of planned speed reduction! The seat appears to be the original item and is in good order it has a nice patina of age and no damage.

The battery is in need of replacement. when running the side light turns on as does the rear light. but the engine cuts out when the headlight is turned on. this may be resolved by a replacement battery or it may require further investigation. The brake light works only on the rear brake. this is often standard for this age of machine.

The speedo is damaged as can be seen in the pictures and it will either need replacement or repair.

In summary this a very nice example of BSAs 350cc B40. it needs very little beyond a recomissioning service to return it to the road as a very clean and tidy rideable classic.
