BSA Gold Star DB 34 Race Machine with Provenance. Ex Roy Davis (Triumph Fame)  Barry Nutley.   Jim Lyons Not road registered.    Engine no DB 34 GSS 6539 .    Roy Davis was most competitive in building B50s and 500 Racing Triumphs. There is  gap in this bike's history between Roy Davis and the 1965 Grandstand Final. and its acquisition by Lyons in the mid 1970s.   Please Email and tell us. Jim Lyons had the bike rebuilt by Roy in 1990. and I purchased this for my private personal collection of what was then 35 bikes together with the last Triumph 500 that Davis rebuilt. The Goldie had been used for six meetings in the early 1990s. thereafter undergoing an engine rebuild. and has been unused since. (Lyons had a bad crash on a B50. broke his leg and retired) The Goldie was competitive and is a great example for a period racer at its best. Jim owned it for 20 years and sold it with others when he retired. This is a fantastic race ready machine for Pre 65 Events.

Barry Nutley is nowadays a bike racing commentator for Sky and others. having been a successful Motor Crosser in his youth.  We reunited him with his old machine at Goodwood September 2014 . nbsp;which brought fond memories of his bike back for him.   A hardened biker. Barry is a walking encyclopaedia on motorcycles and a lovely fellow. It is clear Barry was a very good rider back in the sixties. He was good enough for Roy Davis to sponsor him in 1965/66. first on  a Tribsa. and this purpose built DBD34 with a bespoke cradle frame made from T45 tubing. Barry confirms that Roy only built two Goldies. and it appears this was likely his bike. The T45 tubing has been cut and rewelded to comply with later regulations such as folding footpegs. Gold Star had a twin spark head and titanium conrod. Norton forks and an AMC front hub with Manx Norton conical rear. Barry ran it without a kickstarter. removed for lightness.  Barry had several victories on it in the South and South West in the mid sixties before a big crash and broken bones at Ringwood practicing for the Hants Grand National in 1966.   With its bespoke frame. it was very light and quick in its day. nbsp; at the very top of its game.

The British weather went some way to making household names of many a scrambles riders through the popular Grandstand television coverage from 1962 onwards. The winter of 1962/1963 was particularly severe and played havoc with traditional outdoor sports and the BBC had the bright idea of showing motocross. when frost and snow ruled out any soccer on a Saturday afternoon. Heroes like Jeff Smith. Arthur Lampkin. Dave Bickers. Vic Eastwood  Chris Horsfield  Barry Nutley were beamed into viewers' homes in flickering monochrome (black and white only “Fat” TVs  with small screens. )  In 1965 Barry Nutley led BBC Grandstand trophy at Biggin Hill for two laps ahead of Bickers. Smith. Eastwood and the usual bunch.

We don't see this on TV today but can relive the same experience by attending Pre 65 trial events . There is a great atmosphere at these Pre-65 events. A genuine sense of goodwill and a passion for travelling as fast as possible over punishing terrain. It is extremely well organised with refreshments. St John’s ambulances and some spare parts being sold by a regular vendors at these events. Support these by buying your spares for your race bikes at these events and to support them to stop them become but a memory. This is very much a family sport with many of the competitors bringing the family down with them in the spring in Motor Homes or  stay overnight in local pubs and Bed and Breakfast accommodation before the events.
