Description

1955 AJS 18S 500cc restoration project with V5C

Here is a good project for somebody into AMC bikes to sort out!

This Jampot 500cc Ajay is basically in tidy condition but needs total engine rebuild.

Apart from the engine everything looks to be in very good clean & tidy useable order. /p>

The magneto & dynamo will need to be rebuilt.

The engine is totally dismantled and a bit rough.

The head looks OK having been bead blasted. The barrel is on standard bore. has had some fin repair (good job) and has some rust on the bore but should clean up at +0. 020”or + 0. 030”. There is no piston.

Cams are the H type & look OK. Cam followers in the cases will need replacement.

Be prepared to spend some money on the engine or if you’re lucky you may be able to obtain a good engine complete and ready to drop straight in!

The bike comes with V5C registration certificate. registration number 766 UYJ (nothing in V5C to say this is not transferable)

Frame number A34224 & Engine number 55/18S 27089 both match the V5C doc. It is eligible for historic class (free) road tax and is pre-1960 MOT exempt.

Cosmetically the bike is generally very good.

It has sound paintwork on the frame and all the tinware parts have good paintwork.

Front mudguard is repro in GRP. The rear mudguard is steel but is also a repro I think. Wheel rims are very nice Akront flangeless alloys. spokes are decent. clean rustless variety. Front tyre is as new Avon SM MKII. rear is used but OK Avon SM.

Seat is in very good order. Tank is good & clean inside. Centre stand is good & a decent sidestand is fitted. A decent exhaust & silencer are included (good chrome but some scratches) and an Amal 389 carb.

In short a good tidy bike with good gearbox & clutch etc but a ropey engine.

A relatively easy project. even easier if you know to a good engine to pop straight in! (any 49- on AJS or Matchless pre-unit single engine would fit straight in. Even any  AJS or Matchless twin engine would also fit straight in but you would have to change the engine plates & primary chaincase inner.

Don’t miss this “light” project - you could have it on the road by Easter!
