Description

Here is a 1976 KZ400 Caf? Racer. I built this bike over the last couple years and it was a fun project but I have a couple other bikes and am putting this one up for sale. As you can see it has been modified quite a bit from stock and lightened up as much as possible. This is a KZ400S which is a kick start only model so it needs just a small battery. The bike starts easy, few kicks when cold and pretty much one kick when warm.

The frame was stripped down and everything not needed cut away, ussets and bracing were welded in to stiffen the frame, he passenger peg mounts were cut back and modified to mount rearsets in the correct position. Check out the arched tubing that makes the rearset mount, ery unique and well done. The swingarm has been modified to accept shocks from a Kaw ZR550 and has a nice lightweight brace added to eliminate flexing. The frame and swingarm were then blasted and powdercoated and also have clear powder over the color so it is a very durable finish.

The shocks are rebuilt with new seal heads and oil and the springs are powder coated. The forks are rebuilt with new seals and oil and the lowers are powder coated.

The motor was taken down to the bare cases and everything cleaned. Then put together with new gaskets and seals. Also new piston rings were installed. The carbs are Mikunisfrom a Yamaha Banshee and have been rejetted to run great on this bike. They breath through two Uni foam filters. These carbs are easy to tune and eliminate the problems of the stock CV carbs on a bike that is modified. The exhaust is the stock 2 into 1 headers that are in great shape going into a really nice vintageSupertrapp muffler. The Supertrapp is tunable by adding or removing discs that are under the end cap. As it is the bike is not loud but has a nice mellow thump.

The wheels were completely disassembled andspokes and nipples cleaned. The hubs were polished on the outer sides and powder coated on the inner area. The wheels were then laced and trued. Then new Bridgestone tubes were installed with new Duro HF918 tires. There is a bit of patina on the chrome rims but not much, ust enough to give some character.

The paint is all metal flake green, ilver and gold. Then the pinstripes were done with vinyl. Then about 12 coats of two stage clear wasapplied and then buffed out. The pictures really don't do the paint justice. It really pops more in person.

The seat was done by a local high end upholsterer. I took him an aluminum pan anda bomber jacket and he sculpted the foam and made the cover out of the jacket. The underside of the pan is covered with felt. It is a really, eallynice seat.

The electrical isall custom wired, t has a new Dyna coil and plug wires. The key switch and light switch came from a low mile Kaw S, lso the headlight came from that bike. There is a small dash that has neutral, igh beam and turn indicators.

The rearsets are all handmade, and machined as are the clip ons and the unique head light brackets. All over the bike are little handmadebillet aluminumpieces, ashers and spacersthat really set it off.If you notice in some of the pictures there is a customaluminum license plate bracket.

All the hardware is in good shape and includes a lot of stainless bolts and nuts on most of what I built.

This is a one of a kind bike and if you in the SW PA area you can arrange to come check it out in person. You will notbe disappointed, his bike looks even better in person.
