Description

For sale here is my Ducati 900SS caf? racer project. which I’ve owned for 20 years. Having covered only 18. 36 miles. this used to be my main road bike. and it was always very rapid with excellent handling and braking. It’s never been crashed. and I took it apart many years ago and started to build it into a lightweight tuned caf? racer. light. lean and clean. Unfortunately after starting the conversion and buying a number of parts. marriage. a house move and renovation. a busy job and two children came along to gobble up all my spare time. so the bike has been sitting in a dry garage for 15 years.

What you see in the photo’s is what you get. the rolling bike and the other parts shown – the paddock stand is not included as it belongs to my other bike. The bike is quite tidy and largely complete. but some stuff was dumped or sold as I intended to fit upgraded components (e. g. brake hoses. clutch hose. chain. fairing etc. ). The awful twin choke downdraft Weber carb and all it’s heavy gubbins was dumped and the tank gutted to fit a flat bottom with normal fuel taps to normal carbs such as smoothbore Amals or flatslides. To give you an idea what I was aiming at. this bike was built using exactly the same base model - Follow these links to see how it was built http://thebikeshed. cc/2013/04/05/redmax-900ss/.   https://www. flickr. com/photos/redmaxspeedshop/sets/72157628387961085/. Really nice. and easily achievable. Alternatively. it’s a great base to build a TT1 or TT2 replica using either the original frame or a new frame such as a Baines Imola.

The bike has some nice parts. including gold Brembo brakes (the lovely gold alloy centre lightweight front discs are very expensive). lightweight alloy filler cap. brand new lightweight race seat with integrated tail light. lightweight genuine Verlicchi alloy swinging arm with all fittings and a brand new boxed whiteface Veglia tacho. The engine was running beautifully when I stripped the bike (it turns over easily still) but I removed the front head to check piston clearance for the V2 cams I intended to fit. The top-end will need a full service (shimming and decoke) and obviously the belts. oil. filter etc. need replacing. The bottom end is completely sound as far as I know and just needs some minor jobs and the paint and cosmetics sorting out. The M1R 40mm front forks were class leading in their day – they are light and rigid. and I always found they handled as well as my race Ducati. The forks are straight. but there is light rust on the stanchions where the bike has sat so unused for so long. The wheels are straight. and the whole bike is very light.

This is a half–finished project bike. so it will need parts fabricated and purchased to finish it. It’s not of a pile of smashed up rusty rubbish. but unfortunately it needs more time than I’ve got to complete it. You’ll need to make a wiring loom up. but it is very simple on these bikes and can easily be done using ordinary crimp connectors and readily available parts – I’ve done it loads of times with no problems.

The bike is only loosely assembled and would come apart easily in about 10 minutes into pieces that will easily fit in the back of just about any car. There’s a very low starting price and no reserve. so bid now to bag a bargain and build the Ducati of your dreams on a scooter budget. For a brilliant 900SS project. it's cheap!

Payment by cash on collection. non-returnable deposit of ?50 via Paypal when auction ends. No returns. so any questions ask me now - what you see in the pictures is what you get (except the paddock stand etc. ).

I've had a further dig around the garage and will now include in the sale an original Ducati colour sales brochure for the bike. a new oil filter. a new fuel tank one way breather valve. two new fuel line filters and anything else useful I find before the auction ends. I forgot to mention. but the bike has alloy exhaust collars to replace the heavy steel originals. It goes without saying that you are bidding to buy. not turn up and haggle. so please ask any questions now and I will give the fullest answers that I can. Thanks.

Jut a quick note to say that after a question I checked the bleed nipples on the brake calipers today as they are prone to seize in or shear off on old bikes - all of them unscrew easily by hand and the threads are perfect. so that's very good news if you've ever tried to repair one. Please remember that besides the obvious bits that are missing (fairing!) a few smaller parts have got lost over the years. but nothing that shouldn't be too hard to source cheaply - everything I've got is in the photo's. plus the extra parts I mentioned yesterday. I'll keep scouring my garage. and if I come across anything else of use I'll post it up.
