Description

Up for auction is my beloved 2002 Ducati 998 Monoposto. I do not want to sell it but the need arises due to moving soon and starting a new job in another town, am not thrilled about having to put the bike away in storage for 1-2 years. With much regret I have decided it would be better off in a new home where it can be used properly.
I am the second owner. I bought it in May 2010 with about 17,600 miles on the clock. Now it has 21,925 miles but I still ride it so this may increase slightly. Clear North Carolina title. No liens, o title issues. I have babied this bike and made some great improvements cosmetically, nd to the performance as detailed below. The bike has never been in the rain as long as I have owned it, and always stored in my garage. I am a 40 year old guy so the bike has never been wheelied or abused in any way. I am ashamed to admit the chicken-strips are still on the tires. Comes with two keys. No key chips or other nonsense for this year model.
PAINT/COSMETICS
Never been down or dropped. All fairings are original OEM. No rash or cracks in the fairings. All dzuz fasteners are present and work as they should. Paint is in fantastic condition, lossy as you would expect. No major chips, tc other than typical nicks on the very front leading edges of the fairing (from small road stones, tc). and small scratches consistent with road use. Not visible unless you are really looking closely. You will not find a used 998 in better condition mechanically and cosmetically unless it has been stored away in some rich guy's living room or garage and never used. I really have nothing else to say about the cosmetic condition because it is simply in great shape.
ENGINE/EXHAUST/CLUTCH/TIRES
The engine is stock, nd starts and runs flawlessly. I have never had any issues with the engine performance or reliability. Does not burn oil, leak, r smoke, tc. No gaskets leaking. Just keep this bike on a battery tender and she starts right up. Nothing more I can say. I just have not had issues whatsoever.
It has the Termignoni exhaust kit along with the correct 996R performance chip that came with the Termignoni exhaust. With this exhaust (no restrictors) nothing sounds like this bike. It is loud, ut makes a beautiful tone, lot like an attack helicopter in my opinion. Doing that high speed pass through the school zone or residential neighborhood and setting car alarms off as you thunder by, ou will scare small children and make women crave your company.
At around 19,000 miles or so, thought the original clutch plates and basket were getting a bit loud even for a Ducati, nd a little worn, o I personally replaced the clutch. I installed a brand new Barnett clutch basket and new Barnett clutch plates. I also replaced the slave cylinder with a brand new OEM part, nd installed new oil seals on the clutch push-rod, nd bearing plate. I also installed brand new stainless steel clutch plate springs and red EVR end caps. This clutch is now just awesome. No issues at all. She will last another 20,000 miles at least.
At around 20,000 miles I replaced both tires with fresh rubber. Up front is a Dunlop Q2 (Qualifier 2) 120/70 ZR17. In back is the same tire in the OE spec 190/50 ZR17. They are hardly broken in.
MAINTENANCE/SERVICE
As to maintenance, he prior owner told me he most recently had the 12,000 mile service done. He did not have the records, nd I could not get the records because the dealer closed. Given the condition of the bike, nd having met the prior owner, have no doubt that the service was done. He babied this thing as much as I have. When I bought the bike at 17,600 miles, had the 18,000 mile service performed by a certified Ducati Master Tech when I lived in PA. He checked/adjusted the valves, hanged the belts, alanced the throttle bodies, hanged spark plugs, nd did everything else you would expect at that service. Bike checked out with flying colors. He even asked me to let him know if I was ever going to sell it. If that is not an sign you have a good bike, othing is! I have have all records from this service.
I inspect the belts every 6-12 months and they still look great. However, the bike should get new belts installed in the next 1-2K miles just to be safe. I was going to do them this winter but since I decided to sell, figure the new owner will want to replace the belts themselves for peace of mind, o it is not worth doing on my end.
I change the oil and filter myself every year because I don't put many miles on the bike year to year. I always use Castrol High Performance Synthetic 10W-40 motorcycle oil, nd I always check the oil sump screen as well. I last changed it around March 2015. No issues. The drive chain/sprocket is in great shape. Does not need to be replaced at this time. I changed the antifreeze about 2-3 years ago. As noted I have replaced the front and rear brake pads. I also regularly bleed the brakes and clutch. No other issues with forks shocks, lectrics, tc. I replaced the battery about 2-3 years ago and it has no issues holding a charge and starting, tc. It has a battery tender pigtail installed.
ADDITIONS/IMPROVEMENTS
The original owner had the white number board painted on the front nose fairing, ith the correct silver pinstripe to match the OEM tail. He also had the Ducati performance tail tidy/plate bracket installed along with clear lenses on the OEM turn signals. Also comes with the complete original Ducati tool kit.
Note that this is the base 998. However I removed the black colored stock side mirrors and replaced them with the OEM red colored 998S mirrors. I did so because the color matched red mirrors look so much better in my opinion so it was worth the ridiculous price I paid for the OEM Ducati mirrors. I installed those about 3 years ago.
Also during the time that I have owned it, installed the following items (I am avoiding the obligatory "adding up the dollar cost to show you how much I put into the bike" otherwise I'll likely throw up after seeing the total):
* Power Commander III USB with PC map for the Termignoni system (Probably unnecessary but I feel it has smoothed out the power delivery a bit)
* Bitubo steering damper
* Shorei Lithium Iron Battery (much quicker starts/less cranking as Ducatis are notorious for weak starting/electric systems)
* Motoelectric Hi Capacity Starter and Battery Wire Kit (same deal as above; better starting)
* Evoluzione low temperature fan switch (allows both fans to come on at 210 degrees instead of just one as factory (poorly) designed; better cooling
than factory in traffic/heat. 998's do not like hot summer days sitting in traffic. This keeps the heat at bay)
* Evoluzione side-stand bypass (allows you to start and warm up the bike with the sidestand down like every other bike; poorly designed factory
set-up forces you to sit on bike with the sidestand up. You will thank me in the winter)
* Cycle Cat adjustable clip-ons (they are the best thing you can put on these bikes. Still sporty but can be adjusted many ways; riding position 100%
more tolerable)
* Cycle Cat extended billet side-stand (a sturdier and slightly longer stand than stock; the factory stand is way to short and this avoids the terrible
factory over-leaning, nd flimsy stock stand)
* Rick's Motorsports MosFet regulator/rectifier (OE specs and does not get hot like the junky stock unit; gives better current and not prone to overheat
failure)
* Pipercross foam air filters
* Carbon fiber!
heel guards
exhaust guard
swing arm and chain cover
air intake covers
tachometer cover
* TechSpec black rubber tank guard (and TechSpec rubber side/knee grips not shown but will come with bike)
* Pro-Grip handlebar grips, nd they have been safety wired.
* Cox steel mesh wire guard covers to protect the radiator and oil cooler
* Battery Tender pigtail for trickle charging battery.
* CNC machined aluminum front fork preload adjusters.
EXTRAS THAT WILL ALSO COME WITH THE BIKE
I am also throwing in the Pit Bull single sided swingarm stand that is pictured as well as the factory service manual for the bike (2002 base 998's used the 1999 996R Testastretta engine, o the manual for that bike is correct for the engine), nd a battery tender junior.
BIDDING/SHIPPING AND PAYMENT
Ok, now you know everything I know about the bike. There is nothing more I can really add but I will answer any of your questions via e-mail. Just do me a favor and don't ask questions unless you are a serious bidder/buyer. Sometimes I get tons of window shoppers on Ebay and it takes time to answer questions. You can see that I took care of it. I am pricing it accordingly, ut fairly. I am listing it as a fixed price or best offer. Please, lease, DO NOT waste my time or yours with low ball offers, r ask me to trade something. I won't sell it to you for $2,000, tc. I won't trade for your snowblower or 1986 Ford Bronco. I will listen to reasonable offers, ut I would just as soon keep the bike than give it away.
Also, on't try to beat me up on the mileage. I have been riding bikes (and especially Ducatis) for 20 years. Anybody who knows Ducatis will tell you that a well maintained example with some mileage is a much better bet than the one that has been sitting for 10 years with 2,000 miles on it. Ducatis like/need to be ridden. They do not do well sitting, ontrary to what some people may believe.
I am selling this bike for cash only. I will accept certified or wired funds, ut they must clear and make it into my bank account before I release the bike. Too many scammers so I have to be careful as I am sure you can appreciate. I will work with you on shipping by making myself available for pick up etc.
I am not going to discriminate against bidders who just joined Ebay and/or have no bidding history. HOWEVER, would of course be much more comfortable doing a transaction with a well established Ebayer with a solid history. If you have no history, will be wary but fair. Long-time bidders will get the respect they earned.
OTHER DISCLAIMERS/PEOPLE WHO SHOULD NOT BID
As a long-time motorcycle and Ducati enthusiast, ome things I just can't abide by, o I am providing a list of squidly behavior and other things that disqualify you from ever buying this motorcycle from me. I don't care how much you offer. I won't sell it to you, ver, or any reason if you fit any of these categories. If this is you, ust don't bid:
1. You intend to re-paint this bike any color but the OEM red.
2. You think that colored led lights inside the bike looks cool.
3. You intend to part this bike out (please never do this)
4. You like to do wheelies, topies, r other nonsense.
5. You don't appreciate Ducati, r the 916-998 series, ut just think "it might be cooler than my GSXR."
6. You aren't sure if Ducati makes V-twins or inline fours.
7. You like to put the stickers on your bike of whatever aftermarket part you buy (i.e K&N, ynoJet, tc.)
8. You don't think it is wrong to wear your shorts and sandals or "flip-flops" while riding AND/OR your helmet has a "mohawk" glued to the top.
9. Finally, ou intend to put an "extended swingarm" on this bike. God no.
THANKS FOR VIEWING AND GOOD LUCK!

QUESTION AND ANSWER FORUM:
Just remember like mom always used to say, here are no stupid questions. Well actually there are, ut I will try to just post the ones that are not.
Q: Are the Termignoni a full kit or just the mufflers?
A; Although it was the prior owner who installed the Termignonis, y understanding is that the Termignoni kit for the 998 came with just the slip on mufflers and the 996R performance chip. Therefore I believe these are slip-ons using the existing stock pipes.

Q: Was the bike a "monoposto" to begin with? If not, oes it have the "biposto" parts?
A: This bike was always a monoposto, o no biposto parts.
