Intro:

For your consideration is this excellent and original condition 2000 Ducati 996S. This motorcycle has traveled only 5,500 miles and is nearly flawless. It is arguably in collector condition. The “S” model is a step up from the biposto and monoposto 996 models due to the addition of aesthetic/materials upgrades and other technical bits. The most obvious upgrades are many carbon fiber bits from the factory (front fender, adiator shroud, irbox/panels by inner thighs/knees, hain cover, nder-tail section, nd license plate mount). Approximately 300 “S” models were brought to the United States and this example being number 276.

This is a well maintained machine that is ready to be enjoyed. The tires have less than 800 miles on them and are less than three years old, he oil was changed in April and has less than 200 miles on it, he belts have been serviced having less than 800 miles on them and being less than three years old, nd a new battery was installed in April. Receipts provided. No part of this bike has ever been repainted, o accidents, o repair. It retains its original engine/trans. The stock pipes and turn signals are still the stock units! It is completely unmodified other than having nicer aluminum clutch and brake reservoir caps installed.

It pains me to let this 996S go but I have been wanting to get into motorcycle track days so I have acquired a 1999 996 monoposto for track and street duty. This 2000 996S is preserved too nicely to be seeing track duty which is why I am selling it. Please read all of the below information, iew the 190 photos, nd view the 7 minute video to see just how nice this Ducati 996S is.

    Cosmetics:

The Ducati 916/996/998 to me is the most beautiful sport bike ever made. The design of these bikes is timeless. It is amazing to think the 996 model is now 16 years old and even older are the 916s. The cosmetic condition of this specific 996S also is impressive for the age and mileage. It is of the condition that one could park this bike in their man cave to be able to admire it whenever possible (which I wanted to do for winter storage but the wife did not really like that idea).

This 996S has never been tracked, ever wrecked, ever repaired. Wear and evidence of use is very limited on this bike. The condition is impressive. The bike looks as good as it does in the photos (Please note: There were two dust specs on the lens of my camera thus causing some black dots on some of the photos. Those are not marks on the bike!). There is no significant cosmetic issue on this bike but if I had to pick something, would say on the left hand side of the tail in the white section there are some shallow scuffs which look like from rubbing up against the garage wall or something. They possibly could be wetsanded and buffed out. They are not super noticeable but are there. The front fairing has like two or three minor stone impact marks/chips that are very small, ike sharp pencil tip sized. For noteable marks, hat is really about it. The red paint throughout is impressive, ibrant, lossy, nd smooth. It matches on all panels. The white is glossy and smooth as well, ith gold striping between it and the red. All of the paint looks to be the original factory applied paint which is beautiful high quality applied paint appropriate for an exotic bike. There are no cracks in the plastics and it has never been repaired. Even the back sides and bottoms of the fairings are in impressive shape. The carbon fiber bits retain their original finish and look nice, o cracks. The rims are in excellent shape and without stains. The frame looks great and is glossy. The engine itself looks great. Wires, oses, onnectors, nd etc. throughout look great. Original turn signals are present and in great shape, o cracks. The Brembo calipers and other gold brake bits look great. The Ohlins rear shock and spring shine nicely. The instrument panel is glossy and free of cracks. The hardware throughout retains its natural finish and looks great. It is not oxidized and does not have rust in the head as a bike would that sat for a while, as stored outside, r washed with water.

Look through the extensive and very close up photos. Check out the walk around video. This 996S has been stored indoors, een well taken care of, nd ridden carefully. There is not much to say other than it is in original factory condition with factory finishes applied and is impressive condition. It is worthy of being added to the collection of the most detailed enthusiast.

    Mechanical Condition & Spec

The Ducati 996 comes very nicely equipped from the factory. Some of these features may be standard on modern bikes but were significant to come stock on a factory bike 16 years ago. Some info here is for those not super familiar with the 996 model. The engine is of course a 996CC water cooled twin. If you are not familiar with desmodromic valves find a video on Youtube as it is quite an interesting approach to valve actuation. These twins have some of the best sound you can get from a sport bike. While not having the horsepower of modern super bikes, here is still more horsepower than is needed for street riding as speed limits are easily exceeded. The mid range the twin offers makes street riding and canyon riding plenty of fun. These bikes are even more so known for their excellent handling characteristics. The front shock is a Showa. For this model year it has a special coating to reduce friction. The rear shock on the “S” and monoposto is of course the Ohlins. The suspension is of course fully adjustable front and rear. The rear swing arm is single sided which looks great and makes removal of the rear wheel quite easy. As mentioned, he “S” model has plenty of carbon fiber bits from the factory. A great feature on these bikes is the Ohlins adjustable steering damper. Going from a bike with a steering damper to one without is a significant difference! The steering and ride is much more comfortable with the steering damper. Quick release fasteners are a great addition and make fairing removal/installation quick. This model year has the very light Marchesini front and rear rims which if I remember correctly are magnesium. The 916/996/998 bikes were one of the first to have under tail exhaust (mounted there due to aerodynamic purposes) and the cans on this bike are still the stock ones. The 996 also is fuel injected and has a dry clutch.

This bike has been regularly maintained and is currently ready for the road. The battery has been replaced this year. It starts up right away on the first time every time, hether cold or hot or not having been started for a couple weeks. It idles smooth. No leaks. It runs at a proper temperature. No oil burning, dd vibrations, r etc. The motor revs very freely and feels to have all the power it should and sounds absolutely great. The fuel fitting recall for the fuel tank has been taken care of. The fuel filter was replaced on 7/2013. The oil has less than 200 miles on it and was changed this year. The oil that was drained out looked great and the oil screen was clean. The rockers were checked professionally in 7/2013 when the belts were done and they checked out great. The transmission shifts great and without issue. Neutral is not difficult to find. The clutch works great and also without issue. The fluid was changed and system bled this year. The brakes also are great and without issue. The fluid was changed and systems bled last year. The suspension is excellent and showing no leaks. The fork oil was replaced in 7/2013. The tires have plenty of tread left. There are only about 800 miles on them and they were replaced in 7/2013. The timing belts were serviced in 7/2013 and a receipt is provided. The bike has gone only 800 miles since that service. Turn signals, ead lights, rake light, peedometer, dometer, achometer, emperature gauge, orn, nd dash lights are all fully functioning. Owner’s manuals and two Ducati keys are present and included. Please note: Pictured on the bike are Helibars which will be removed and stock clip ons installed. If the next owner really wants the Helibars I might be able to work something out. That would then leave the only two upgraded items being the aluminum clutch and brake reservoir caps.

I purchased this 996S as factory original rideable collector bike. It should suit its next caretaker just the same. Get on, ide, nd enjoy right away.

    Conclusion:

On a motorcycle it is all about the details and the Ducati 996 truly rides and presents like the exotic bike that it is and offers an experience that mass produced bikes cannot. The “S” model offers even more appeal with the addition of the carbon fiber bits, wo tone solo tail, nd very limited production. This 996S truly is in impressive unmolested, actory original condition. Interest is increasing in these 916/996/998s. Ride and enjoy as the value stays strong or goes up. Getting a low mileage stock condition example like this is the way to go.
