In this auction we have a Harley Davidson X90 from 1973.
This was purchased as an abandoned project. New pistons, ings, ork tubes, nd a seat cover were installed just to get it running. As you can see, t runs fine and starts easily. Check out the video here.
Some standout details are the new parts listed above as well as --
*its ability to easily start and idle
*clutch works great and the functional gears work well
*comes with a new old stock chain guard
*comes with a 1970s manual (and there isn't any significant difference between the model years)
There is one interesting standout piece of information about this machine, owever, hat makes it unusual (and, erhaps, nique among these bikes). The transmission, hen we test rode it, roved to have a disabled fourth gear. The transmission shifts cleanly into fourth, ut instead of engaging the gear itself, t simply slides into place and is in neutral.
As you can imagine, e were puzzled by this, ut before we elected to take the machine apart, e consulted with a local Harley mechanic who is long retired and worked on these types of machines at the dealership. He had indicated this might be intentional, ecause their dealership offered an option for concerned parents that would allow them to limit the top speeds for these 60+mph machines. The dealership, or a small fee, ould take the fourth gear off of the transmission shaft and flip it so it was not able to be engaged. Whether this was an intentional limitation imposed on this machine, r an unintentional error made by the last restoration enthusiast, e cannot tell. It is a strong running machine despite this modification and, or most mechanics, his could easily be remedied.
Finally, ou will want to know that the oil pump has been disabled. You will want to mix your fuel and oil separately and not rely on the bike to do it on its own, r you can buy an easily sourced replacement oil pump.
This machine starts easily and runs well and would be a perfect pit bike to take to your swap meet days or to gift to a youngster who is capable of handling a machine that can still probably hit 50 mph in third gear. The truth of the matter is that for this machine, ith its smaller wheels and smaller brakes, o one will miss fourth gear and your price of entry for a fun piece of motorcycle history is going to be much lower compared to similar machines.
