This bike is in amazing "survivor" condition. My friend's uncle bought it brand new while attending flight school in Pensacola, lorida as a Marine helicopter pilot. Note the original receipt matches the license plate frame from Hero Motorcycles. The license plate is the original 1973 from Florida. Note the Navy base sticker on fork leg matches the date of purchase on the receipt; he put a deposit down in Nov 1972 and the base sticker has 12-3 which indicates that he registered it on base in Dec (12) and that it was good until that month in 1973 (3). Anyway, e then got transferred to CA where he started some registration stuff but looks like he never finished it.
The odometer indicates 3208 miles which I believe to be true. The bike has been stored indoors and was found in a locked garage in Orange County, A after the uncle passed away, long with a bunch of other motorcycles. I bought it from my friend to help him out since he lives across country and because his uncle was a neat guy and this is a neat bike. I have no idea how long it has been since the bike was on the road but the uncle had half a dozen other more modern bikes with higher miles and this one hasn't been registered since 1973 so I imagine he may have started it once in a while but I doubt it was any time in the last ten years or so. It kicked over with great compression, ut I still pulled the original plugs, oaked the cylinders for a couple nights with a few squirts of motor oil to soak the rings and then was not surprised when after a little work, t started up within a few kicks.
Here's the little bit I did to it before attempting to start it:
• Replaced air cleaner (old one had turned to dust)
• Replaced ignition switch since key was lost. (I have the original)
• Changed engine oil. It was black but thin, ot gummy. No major oil leaks
• Replaced Battery. I still have the original with wrap-around AMF sticker but obviously it is dead
• Replaced spark plugs
• Adjusted and lubed choke wire
• Drained fuel and replaced fuel line. The gas had not turned to shellac, nd the inside of the tank is pristine. The gas came out really red so I'm thinking it had Sea Foam additive in it? Also, he float bowl was drained on the Bendix carb and the petcock was in fully off position when parked (this guy knew what he was doing!)
• The only chrome I shined up was the air cleaner cover. Everything else just got a simple soap and water bath and nothing else, ut you can see how easy this would be to restore if you want to go that way.
• All lights work, igh/low, ail, rake, diot lights, tc. It doesn't look like wiring has ever been touched
Here's what it needs:
• Front master cylinder rebuild or replace
• Tires (these are likely original)
• Chain (this is likely original)
Anything else on top of that would just be fine tuning carburetor, eplacing front fender, tc. I have a nice fender in gloss black from the same era that I will include along with the bike.
It starts immediately when warm and takes a little more effort when cold. It likes lots of throttle to get primed and just a little choke or none at all when cold.I have only ridden it around the block a few times and I'drecommend a new chain, ires and wheel bearing grease at least before you decide to ride it cross country.
This bike is very original and complete. Please look at the photos and watch the video before your contact me. Email for video link since I can't seem to embed it here.
I can ship anywhere at your expense.
