Description

 Up for auction is my 1980 Harley Davidson Ironhead.   I believe I'm the third owner.   I've had it for little over four years.   It has never given me any problems.   I've put a few thousand miles on it since I bought in 2010. to include a 1000 mile trip through the Blue Ridge Parkway in 2012.  Indeed. most of the upgrades (new tires. new suspension. new chain. bearings. etc. .  that I discuss below were because I wanted it to be ready for my mountain trek -- it performed flawlessly and was a credit to its heritage!  Many newer bikes. to include liquid cooled crotch rockets. nbsp;don't fare well on 95 degree days in the mountains of Virginia.   I was proud to have rode her on that trip and had numerous folks come up to me to talk about the bike. nbsp;the Harley heritage and how they regret selling theirs (I hope I don't too).

The bike is obviously used and is certainly not a trailer queen. but for a bike that is 34 years old. it's in pretty good condition.   With a timeless and somewhat rare factory paint scheme. I get quite a few compliments on this bike and still enjoy the bike. but I simply have too many motorcycles.  I presently have 6 bikes and now only have room for 3 so I'm letting a few go. That said. if it doesn?ˆ™t hit the reserve price then I can tell my wife that I?ˆ™m forced to keep this great bike :>)

This is pretty good handling old motorcycle. I won?ˆ™t say it handles like a sport bike but it handles pretty darn good. I've upgraded the suspension front and rear with progressive suspension (progressive fork springs and fresh oil in the forks and progressive 412 shocks in the back -- I doubt if it handled this good when it was new).   The rear tire has about 1200 miles on it; the front has about 2000 miles (matching Dunlops).   You will not need rubber for quite a while.

 To my knowledge. the engine is pretty close to stock.   A few of the extras that come with the bike:

- Leather Saddlebags (nothing fancy. just some old FXRS Dyna bags that I'm throwing in as I don't have a use for them if this bike sells);

- Windshield;

- Passenger Backrest;

- near new tires;

- Progressive Fork Springs (11-1120);

- Progressive 412 Rear Shocks;

- Forward Controls (the bike has forward controls and that works for my 34" inseam; however. as you can see from the pictures. I'm including the factory mid-mount controls which you can install if you have shorter legs or prefer that riding style);

- Chain is near new (530 Sigma. 110 link) as is the sprocket;

- new bearings in both front and rear wheels (did this when the tires were installed);

- rear wheel was an eyesore so I had it powder coated;

- steering stem and trees have new bearings.

As you can see. I tried to make mainly functional upgrades to the bike.   The only thing I didn't want to mess with was the speedometer.   The needle is bouncy between 40 and 60 mph.   I didn't want to change it out as the odometer works fine and reflects the actual mileage (Virginia list "actual" mileage on the title and that's what appears on the title which I have in my possession).   Also. years ago (before I ever owned it). there was rust in the gas tank.  Fortunately. no one ever touched that or tried to "fix" it.   They just ran fuel through it and I've continued with that and have never had a problem.   In fact. I've never even had to change the in-line fuel filter. I offer that information simply because I don't want you to see rust and I think I've sold you something that won't make it down the driveway.   Actually. in my experience with old bikes. it's when you try to put a liner or cr£me in the tank to cover rust that you have problems so I was happy to see that no one has ever messed with the tank.

If you want to come look at and ride the bike or have a local friend do it on your behalf. please feel free to send me an email and we?ˆ™ll make the arrangements.   Ride it and you will not be disappointed as long as you know that you are bidding on an old Harley.   They have a character and feel all their own.

The bike is sold ?ˆ?as is?ˆ? and without any implied or expressed warranty.   $500. 00 is due with 48 hours of the auction?ˆ™s close.   The remainder is due at pick-up or in 7 days. whichever comes first.   I know it?ˆ™s not always possible to get time off from work to come across the country to pick up a bike or guess the weather if you?ˆ™re coming from the Midwest or northern parts of the country (been there done that) so if you need me to store the bike until you can come and get it. that is not a problem.   As long as the cycle is paid for within 7 days of the auction. I will send you the title and keys and store the bike for up to 90 days with no charge to you.   If you make the arrangements for shipping. I?ˆ™ll be happy to assist in any way.   If you want to fly into Norfolk. VA and ride the bike home. just let me know and I?ˆ™ll pick you up at the airport and have the bike ready for your trip.  I wouldn't take a 34 year old Sporty cross-country. but I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere within a day's drive.

As I said. the bike gets compliments all the time. I have a nice Harley Davidson FLHT tourer and a BMW K1200 tourer ?ˆ“ neither gets the compliments of this old Sportster.   Please feel free to ask me questions.   I?ˆ™m certainly not a professional ?ˆ?ebayer?ˆ? in that I have a day job. but I will certainly answer all questions as soon as possible.

Bottom line: If you?ˆ™ve always wanted a nice old Harley but were scared off by the price ?ˆ“ then this is your bike! Good luck and ride safe.
