1956 Harley Davidson Semi Restored Police Bike

I actually don?ˆ™t know very much about this bike.   I bought it as one of 10 vintage twins approx. 8 years ago.   At the time. the bike had been in a private collection for a decade or so.   As I was going through each bike in the load. getting them started . this one did start but the manual advance wasn?ˆ™t working or something with the ignition system so I took it apart and needed some parts and there it has sat until now.  

I purchased the bike out of Ohio and it is supposedly a Cleveland PD bike.   I cannot confirm that but will tell you that I also had a 1950 EL bone stock unrestored police bike from  West VA in this group and upon digging deep I found photos of the original owner with the bike in service with the PD.   Point is. the guy I bought them all from and gave me whatever backgroiund he knew seemed to be honest and his stories checked out.   This bike was silver (not original paint though)  when I got it which I think is or was the Cleveland PD color.   There had been a gas leak that bubbled the silver paint on the left tank so I decided to repaint all the sheetmetal.   I chose black bc the other police bike I have is jet black and it?ˆ™s a wicked looking bike and I figured if the next owner wants it to be correct its no big deal to repaint the tanks and fenders.    If u want to run it however. it?ˆ™s a pretty imposing bike in black ?ˆ“ I almost want to keep it now ?ˆ“ but cant.  

Based on the specific parts on this bike it seems that its very likely a former police bike.   The FLE designation is correct for a police issue bike.   It has the correct square oil tank. radio bags (no radio though). police speedo (def original). tank shift. siren (def original - actuated from a lever on left handlebar). red pursuit lights (I think they are Guide). solo seat. black painted forks. black wheels and of course the fender mounted POLICE sign.   I don?ˆ™t know that the police oil tank and radio bags are being reproduced ?ˆ“ ive never seen repops of them.   The bike is ultra clean ?ˆ“ almost too clean for me.   Its tight which I should love but I like original paint machines with obvious stories and wear from their 70 year lifespans.   

I cannot say what is oem original or not because I have not stayed up on all the details that I used to know. If you look closely at the photos u may notice some parts are not completely attached yet.  I will attach them. I intend to get her started. this weekend.
