The Fat Boy has been hugely popular ever since it was introduced into the Harley-Davidson Softail family in 1990. The kitschy name combined with its solid command of the road. attract riders looking to make a statement with their motorcycle. For 2007. The Motor Company gave the Fat Boy a facelift (no weight loss though). As the catchy print advertisement says. "It went to the Fat Farm and came back fatter. " Indeed it did. but in a good way.

Let's start with the bike's profile. A fat rear end is all the rage these days in the custom motorcycle world. so the Fat Boy now sports a wider 200mm rear tire with a new chopped rear fender to show it off. The front wheel diameter's been increased from 16 to 17 inches with a 140mm tire wrapped around it. While we're talking wheels. the solid disc cast aluminum rims that came to signify the Fat Boy are now perforated with a series of "bullet holes" (50-caliber size if you were wondering) redefining that signature look. This is in response to riders who complained the solid wheels didn't allow for cross winds to funnel through putting extra wind pressure on the bike.

In the motorcycling. fatter often means more powerful. The 2007 Fat Boy is powered by Harley's new Twin Cam 96B V-twin engine (1584cc). B is the designation for the engines that are counterbalanced to reduce engine vibration transfer to the frame. Since the engine is rigid-mounted to the Softail frame. vibration is offset with counterbalancer shafts. (The engine in the Dyna models. by comparison. is rubber mounted to the frame. ) The more powerful Twin Cam 96 is definitely noticeable from the previous year's Twin Cam 88. A lot more power and torque is evident at roll-on. Numbers provided by Harley-Davidson indicate a 15 percent torque improvement on the Softails. There is a 103 Big Bore Kit upgrade available from Harley for riders desiring even more oomph.

In keeping with that fatter profile. the bike now has bigger handlebars '1. 25 inch in diameter' with wires hidden inside. a cool custom feature. The cockpit features a new leather two-up seat with a stylish leather valance trimmed with chrome 'bullets' and leather lacing. A new leather tank strap is trimmed in chrome bullets and lacing to match the seat. A clock has been added to the new speedometer face. as well as a light to indicate when you're in 6th gear. The new Boy's graphics are even more striking than before. with a new triple-layer decal graphic matching the design on the front and rear fenders.

As I mounted the fatter Boy. I was reminded of why I like this bike so much. It's nice and low boasting one of the lowest seat heights in Harley's lineup at 25. 4 inches. It should be noted that the bike is on the wide side so those with short inseams may lose an inch on either side straddling the wide bucket seat. Fortunately. the bike has a very low center of gravity so it's easy to maneuver even when half your leg strength is lost by the wide stretch. New chrome risers bring the handlebars right to the rider; most will find the placement satisfying. Forward controls are not too far forward with your feet resting on large floorboards.

The new engine comes to life quickly thanks to Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI). The familiar Harley trademarked 'potato. potato. potato' rumble is still evident. a feature Harley engineers were careful not to affect too much when upgrading the engine. I noticed the new sound is more intense and throaty. Harley fans with keen ears will be able to hear the difference.

Not much has changed in the handling of the Fat Boy. I've ridden this bike many times and found the 2007 handles much the same way it has in the past despite having a new motor and bigger tires. Handling starts to become an issue when rear tires sizes are 250 mm and larger. This new and improved Fat Boy felt planted providing a solid ride gliding over imperfections in the pavement. Weighing nearly the size of some touring bikes at 714 pounds. the Fat Boy lumbers through the turns. Don't expect to rip up the twisties on this heavy duty boy.

A new 6th speed transmission widens the powerband with revised gear ratios in 1 through 5. Snicking through the gears on the highway at 70 mph it was nice to have a 6th gear to shift into lowering rpm by about 400. I recall riding the 2006 Big Twin models. particularly the smaller sized Softails and Dynas. and at 75 mph the motor would feel like it was screaming for more power. Harley's numbers indicate 5th gear on the 2006 Big Twins reaches 3226 rpm at 75 mph. The 6th gear Cruise Drive as Harley calls it drops rpm down to a smooth and fuel efficient 2800 rpm.

A new clutch cable reduces the effort needed to pull in the clutch by 7 percent on the Fat Boy and other Softail models. Having spent a lot of time on various Harley-Davidsons. this was very noticeable to me. Last year. clutch effort was reduced 35 percent on the Dynas. something every rider will notice and appreciate.

Harley's stock brakes do a more than adequate job of stopping the hefty package. Four-piston calipers apply pressure to floating uniform expansion rotors in the front and in the rear.

While the Fat Boy might have put on a little weight. it certainly wears it well. Devoted fans of this model may be tempted to trade in their old Boy for the beefier mount. New fans will just love the big. bold look.
