You are bidding on a 1966 Honda CB77 Superhawk Motorcycle. This is Honda’s first “Sport” bike and was well received when it came out. This bike was pretty state of the art in the 1960’s with overhead cam, ouble leading brake shoes front and rear, lectric starter, nd of course the engine was powerful and didn’t leak oil as most other bikes of the day did. It was extensively used for racing in the day, nd everyone wanted one. This bike is 50 years old this year! In the popular book and true story: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, he Author of the story rides his Superhawk across the country.

I have owned this bike for a few years and really worked everything out mechanically, hile putting plenty of miles on. I can honestly say this this bike is ready to jump on and ride right now. This bike has been lovingly worked on by a certified aircraft mechanic with a reputation for being quite picky about the details. During my time with this bike, nd having owned several examples, have become a bit of an expert on this bike. Several items on this bike took time to sort out, nd every hundred miles or so, nother wire would chafe through, switch would break, r a new leak would develop. I often see ads, r have gone to look at bikes that say “Ready to ride across the country, eeds nothing” and it turns out that they need just about everything! If you see an ad that says “0 miles since complete rebuild” rest assured that YOU will get to be the one who finds out all of the leaks, harging problems, ncorrectly assembled parts, eeded carb adjustments, iscovers the engine needs to be removed, nbsp;and other problems. I have over $1200 in receipts for all the parts I have bought, hich I will pass on to the new owner. Of course this bike has a clean and clear Colorado Title that matches the frame number.
HISTORY: This is an original Colorado bike. Reportedly all of the previous titles were in Colorado, ith records back to 1971. There were 4 owners prior to me. The gentleman I bought it from bought it at Auction. The gentleman before that did the paintwork, ut no engine work. The bike was taken down to bare metal by sandblasting, nd then painted and sealed with Kirker Primer/sealer. Red and silver were matched to NOS parts and then mixed locally in Denver. Red is PPG Concept (DCC), nd the Silver color is PPG Concept (DCB) basecoat with 2 coats of PPG clear coat. Reportedly the front forks and swingarm were left slightly orange peeled to facilitate rock chip touch-ups. This is a 1966 model, s the wiring harness under the tank is a quick way to tell when it was made. Often the bike was titled when sold to a customer, ot when it was delivered to the dealer, o sometimes they will be titled a year off. This is titled as a 66, nd is a 66. No Hondas of this vintage had “matching numbers” (engine number and frame number the same) Each frame was taken off the line and bolted to an engine coming off the line that day. If a frame or engine did not pass inspection, t was removed from the line, nd the numbers got a little further off. This is WELL documented, nd since these numbers are close, hey are very likely originally together.
ENGINE: All engine work performed by an Aircraft mechanic with proper tools. I have extensive photos and receipts (over $1200) of the entire process. I am happy to share with you all of the work and time spent on your next motorcycle.
- Original Engine
- Brand New Wiseco forged pistons, mm oversize
- Brand New Wiseco piston rings
- Brand new piston pins
- Cylinders professionally bored 1mm oversize
- Cylinders cross hatch honed with fine pattern
- Intake and Exhaust valves ground on centerless grinder
- Valve seats ground and lapped to perfection
- Every engine piece disassembled, LTRASONICALLY cleaned in proper solution and checked
- NO BLASTING MEDIA (glass, and) used on this engine therefore NO CONTAMINATION!
- The inside of this engine is as clean as the outside. First rate overhaul
- Brand New Clutch friction plates.
- Brand new o-rings and seals used throughout, O LEAKS!
- Charging Stator re-worked, nd windings re-sealed in fiberglass cloth with resin.
- All outside cases polished to a mirror shine
- Starter disassembled and cleaned / lubed and armature re-surfaced
- Carbs Completely disassembled and cleaned ULTRASONICALLY. Extra stock spacer drilled and tapped to facilitate mercury sync tool. Tuned and synced perfectly. This is something that takes some miles on the bike to do and do right. Again… makes you wonder how the zero miles since rebuild guys did wide open throttle runs in top gear to get the main metering jet and needle height set right?
- Engine starts right up, ven when cold, eeds a brief warm-up before it will take the throttle hard.
- NO SMOKE, ew rings are seated and this bike does not smoke.
- Brand New Air filters
- Brand New Air filter rubber Hose (Filter to Carb)
FRAME: The frame was completely disassembled a few years ago and the paint was done by the previous owner. Although I would call the paint job above average, t has a few minor scratches, nd a bit of orange peel on the fork legs. You can tell the quality when you look in all of the nooks and crevices and there is no overspray present or dirt or grime in the cracks. This is a very clean motorcycle, nd it shows when you look in these areas. You can tell it was disassembled, hen painted, llowed to dry properly and re-assembled. This is really the RIGHT way to do it.
- Fuel tank cleaned with acid. Looks brand new inside, o cheap “shortcut” inside coating to come loose or cover up the flaws. One crack TIG welded and hidden behind a chrome cover. NO LEAKS!
- Fuel Petcock bowl threads in good condition, luminum nut not rounded off, ew genuine Honda rubber seals inside. Positive shut off and seals great
- Speedo and tachometer work great. No fading on the speedo face
- Charging system works great. This is a traditionally weak area on this motorcycle. The rotor is a PERMANENT magnet, nd there is NO voltage regulator, o the EXPECTED LOAD and the EXPECTED charging capacity are intentionally closely matched. Any weakness of the magnet or extra resistance of the windings, eakness in the Diode, r extra load will cause weak or no charging. I suspect that many of these bikes stay on a trickle charger and will go down the road for 75 miles before it becomes apparent that they are not ACTUALLY charging. This bike actually charges and can be ridden any length of time with the headlight on
- Seat upholstery is good with 1 small tear about 1 inch long near the rear right side
- Wheels hubs are polished and the rims don’t have any rust
- The brakes are adjusted and strong
- The battery is not new but starts the bike well and keeps a charge
- Tires have plenty of tread left, re not cracked, nd don’t lose air. Filled with Nitrogen
- Has the low handle bars, af? style
- Equipped with 2 brand new genuine Honda mirrors
- All the lights work, ll the switches work properly
- Exhaust Pipes are original, nd still have the original baffles (which were often removed for “more power” and lost) they are in good condition with no obvious rust or large dents. The underside does have some scrapes from going over curbs or cornering. The visible areas are some of the best originals I’ve seen
- New clutch cable, ew front brake cable, ew rear brake cable. Throttle cable lubed and very precise action
- Rear sprocket has some wear. Chain is in pretty good shape. I would budget for a chain and sprocket in about 1000 miles
- The shocks are surprisingly good and it takes the bumps better than some of my other bikes. These forks are probably from a 1965, r this is a very early 1966 model (the 1966 had alloy forks, ot painted steel as these are)
- I have the rear pegs, nd kickstart lever. They are off right now for solo riding. The kickstart clutters the right side, nd is very weak on this design. A hard kick can shatter the right side engine cover, o rather than tempt fate it is removed. MANY Superhawks you see will have the case cover cracked, r completely torn out
- Rear mud flap is a reproduction
This is a really good example of a vintage Superhawk. I have taken it to the mountains, o Red Rocks, o many a vintage bike night here in Denver, nd I have a lot of confidence in it. That being said, t is a 50 year old motorcycle and is being sold AS-IS, ith no warranty express or implied. I have owned a lot of motorcycles and have wasted money and travelled to see some real junk out there. I know your time is valuable and you don’t want to be disappointed. I have tons of pictures, oth of it now, nd of the rebuild process which I am happy to share with you. Feel free to ask plenty of questions. You are welcome to see a cold start, erform a compression test, ide it around, nd have it inspected to any degree by you or the mechanic of your choosing. I have lots of tools and lots of knowledge of this bike and I can show you and explain a lot about it.
