Description

Rare Honda SL250 Redline Frame Motocross Race Bike
This is a 1972 SL250 Motosport engine in a Redline frame, ust be about 1975 based on the laydown shock mounting. Heavy duty footpeg mounts and wide pegs, wingarm was lengthened 1.5" and a BBR chain guide added, long with a chain roller on the frame. The tank, eat, nd fenders are from the '75-'78 Elsinore time period. Wheels are both nice and round and true and have heavy duty stainless Buchanan spokes and nipples, nd have brand new Michelin Starcross 5 tires mounted on them. I just put on a brand new chain, nd a brand new freshly oiled Uni filter in the airbox. Front forks are Elsinore, ear shocks are Works Performance. Motor is not your dad's SL250, his motor has internal rotor electronic ignition (wow, hat an improvement in acceleration AND NO MORE POINTS!!), eworked pipe that snakes BEHIND the shock (when I got the bike the pipe went along the outside of the shock - lame) with a custom made aluminum muffler. The motor is super fast and has a LOT of compression, o much compression in fact, hat when I got the bike I noticed oil drooling off the back side of the motor. The center case was cracked. I took the motor to a guy who is a Honda mechanic from way back and he told me that this is a common occurrence on high compression Honda motors, aused by the kickstarter (actually caused by the guy operating the kickstarter kicking it wrong), aid he had seen it many times and he could just weld it and it would be fine. That was in 2006 when I got the bike, nd the case looks exactly the same as the day he welded it. I did buy another bottom end just in case I needed to change out the cases, nd I am including that with the bike. How does it start? Like every other old big four stroke, ifficult to start when the motor is cold..........but not anymore......now it starts like Dungey's KTM, ou just turn on the gas, ut the choke on, urn the motor over by hand to get the piston at the top of the compression stroke, ut the ELECTRIC STARTER up to the crankshaft, ush the button, nd bingo! AMAZING!! This was about $500, nd worth every penny. Once the motor is warm, t actually starts pretty easy, ut no more frustrating early morning workout sessions, ust put the starter up to the engine, ush the button, et the starter down, nd go to the line. What else? Oh yeah, ommy Croft raced this bike at Mid-Ohio in the Legends Race (back in about 2007 I think), heck out the photos of him with my son, ho I built this bike for. My son raced this bike from 2007 until 2012 in the AHRMA vintage sportsman 250 Expert class, aybe four times a season, hen he built a 125 Duster for classic class so the bike sat for a couple years. This year we dug it out again and he raced it last in October at Moberly, nd went 2-1 for the overall in sportsman 250 expert. Now he's building more 125's, nd he also has a house to work on now, o we decided to sell this bike. I just re-painted the frame and swingarm, ut since it is a race bike and not a display piece, left the tank and seat alone. The tank has one small dent in the top (right where it hurts most) and the right side is dented in, 've photographed these as best as I can. The seat has one little tear right at the front above the carb - also photographed. Besides the spare motor and the electric starter, am also including a brand new seat cover. Yes, his frame was nickel plated when I got it, ut it was rusty in places and had about two dozen snaps riveted on it to hold the hokey naugahyde air box(?) in place, hat I had to painstakingly remove and weld up every little hole. I paid a pretty penny for this bike when I bought it in 2006 right here on eBay and I wanted to cry when I saw it in person for the first time. Needless to say, t did not look like it does now. Trust me, ou will not cry when you see this bike for the first time. If you have ANY questions, eel free to call my cell at 507-273-6357. If you win this auction, ou are responsible for the pickup and delivery, owever, f it helps, or $100 I will deliver the bike to Diamond Don's in April. I am setting the reserve pretty low based on the rarity and condition of this bike, ut if it does not meet the reserve, ou can ask me afterwards what it was. Thanks, andy Nagel.
