Description

1998 Honda XR400R trail / enduro bikeThis is a really good all-round XR400 that my brother bought earlier on in the year thinking he would use it around the farm and maybe go for his bike test - but he's decided that he never uses it and has no interest in going on the road on a motorcycle. There is no other reason for sale than lack of interest.  I've checked the bike over. had it going and had a bit of a run on it and I have to say it's pretty awesome. kind of makes me feel old letting something like this slip through my fingers. it seems like yesterday I'd have killed to have one of these sitting in my shed. The XR400 was probably the pinnacle of this generation of Hondas. and like many Hondas it has a near perfect balance of power. weight. and handling and altogether just feels "right". It is MUCH lighter and more nimble than the XL600 I used to have and as such is a proper off-road bike. but it's not that much less powerful. although admittedly is a bit lower geared. I took it for a little blast along the road and it pulls cleanly with no flat spots and goes through all the gears smoothly. It sounds great through the DEP exhaust. but not anti-socially noisy. The wheels are running true and there is no notchiness at the steering head. Chain and sprockets are in reasonable condition. and disc brakes front and rear work well with no binding. The bike has no MOT at present but from a quick look over it I can't see any reason why it wouldn't get one. Take a close look at the pictures because they form part of the description. As you can see there are the usual marks and some surface corrosion as you would expect from a 15-year-old off-roader. but all in all it's pretty good with no oil leaks or signs of bits being straightened out etc. The speedo is showing 23. 09 miles which seems about right for the overall condition - I've no way to verify this but the cable and drive unit look to be original so it's most likely genuine. I've also made a short video of the bike starting and running today: this is starting on half-choke. not stone cold but not properly warmed up which if you know these perfomance singles you'll be aware these can be the trikiest starting conditions - as you can see it fires up easily first kick and soon idles nicely.  http://youtu. be/kMtQJhAxSzg  It has a manual de-compressor lever on the handlebars which I'm not sure is standard but it makes it easy to get it over TDC and get a good swing at it when cold. Once warm it start easily with just a sharp prod on the lever. All in all this is a great opportunity for someone moving up from a smaller trail bike to to something with more serious capability. or even for entry-level competition in enduros etc. Or it would make a great winter hack / commuter; these are super-tough and dependable and will shrug off winter conditions better than most. The bike aslo has some extras as follows:-DEP stainless / alloy rear exhaust pipe / silencer. nearly new condition. recently fittedHeavy-duty alloy engine guard / bash plateStainless "Toolsport" Tool Caddy box in behind side panelRecent-looking Renthal handlebars on risers (about 1" higher than if mounted directly to top yoke - not sure if this is standard)Heavy-duty plastic / aluminium lever guards on handlebarsQuality aftermarket aluminium fuel tank capAlso along with the bike but not shown in pictures:-Plastic front disc brake coverOriginal black plastic rear mudguard extender / number plate mounting piece (for fitting number plate and reflector properly for MOT)Couple of small points to note:-Tiny rip (about 10mm) in seat coverRear tyre quite worn. but probably good enough for MOTGreen neutral light not workingNo side-stand - there was an after-market one clamped onto the swing-arm but it was broken so I took it off. Should be very easy to get another one. V5C New-style registration document present in my brother's name. this will be signed over by him. The bike is located in Argyll.
