First and foremost. the F6B is not a traditional motorcycle. no matter what you call it. a bagger. sport-tourer or anything else. But then. neither was the original GL1000 Gold Wing way back in 1975. Since then. Honda has sold more than 550. 00 GL's in one form or another.

The new-for-2013 F6B. has really been in existence for well over a decade. It is redefined. more than ?ˆ?new?ˆ?. The difference is what is no longer there. The F6B is a regular GL1800 Gold Wing luxury-tourer with 62 pounds of equipment removed. knocking the claimed wet weight down to 842 lb. The entire top trunk has gone missing. of course. and so has the reverse gear along with its motors and mechanisms. There?ˆ™s no cruise control. and the big. tall. manually adjustable windshield of the regular Wing has been replaced with a very short. fixed one. Neither did the electronically adjustable rear suspension make the cut; the shock?ˆ™s damping rates were revised to complement the F6B?ˆ™s reduced weight. but preload is only manually adjustable via a knob under the right side cover.  Its?ˆ™ not just in the bike?ˆ™s name or intentions. The effect on the performance is just shy of remarkable.  Once you toss a leg over it. however. the F6B is far from the same as the full blown GL1800. Flicking it back-and-forth while straddling the roomier. marginally lower seat reveals what the loss of so much mass?ˆ”in particular. that big. heavy trunk that sat so high and so far to the rear?ˆ”can do to reduce the Wing?ˆ™s center of gravity. Once you are moving. the difference is so pronounced that the F6B almost feels like an entirely different machine. With 62 fewer pounds to lug around. the huge 1832cc six cylinder accelerates from a dead stop at a rate that will pull your arms straight. and its acceleration through the gears is very respectable for a bike this size. The roll-on performance in top gear is also impressive thanks to the gratifying torque smoothly delivered from the flat-Six. 122 foot-pounds. according to Honda. The F6B comes with a great AM/FM. iPod/MP3-compatible sound system. but because there is no trunk. there are no rear speakers. Also since the levers for operating a Gold Wings?ˆ™ saddlebags also are normally built into the trunk. the F6B?ˆ™s bags instead open with a lever under each passenger grab rail and lock/unlock by inserting the ignition key into tumblers just above the left edge of the rear light.

Its brakes are also exemplary. the linked braking system providing impressive power. Pressure from its three-piston calipers is firm and steady without being grabby while providing great feel to riders at the lever. Honda's Combined Braking System. with three-piston calipers front and back. has a second master cylinder and a three-stage proportional control valve (PCV) to operate the calipers in tandem. The front runs dual floating 296mm discs. and a good squeeze on the front brake lever activates the outer two pistons of the front right-side caliper and the center piston of the front left-side caliper while the secondary master cylinder and an inline proportioning valve activate the outer two pistons of the rear caliper. The rear brake pedal operates the center piston of the rear brake caliper. the center piston of the front right-side brake caliper and the outer two pistons of the front left-side caliper. It is the kind of system where riders get a good sense of the calipers biting into the disc when they squeeze the brake lever and feel the effects of smooth. even braking. Honda accomplishes this without much dive in the fork. the 45mm cartridge unit sporting an anti-dive system while utilizing the same internals. damping and springs as the Gold Wing.
