Description

Up for auction is the following:

A 1985 Honda VF700F Interceptor. used. in good condition. Bike has never been down (other than a few parking lot tipovers) and is generally original. It is not running at this time. as the carbs are fouled and the battery stone dead.

Body: Plastics are in pretty good shape. Both front "cheeks" have some cracking and damage just due to age. Lower plastics are in good shape. Typical fading of the red rear panels. but all of the mounting tabs are in good shape. The tank has wear scratches and a dent with about a penny-sized rust spot on the left-hand side. but is in otherwise good condition. Windscreen is good. Seat is faded. but the vinyl is intact. not torn. and other than a 1/4 inch spot up front. the stiching is tight.

Mechanical: Also generally good. Tires are Pirelli Sport Demons. 120/80R16 up front and 140/70R18 out back. Tires were new in 2006; they have less than 1000 miles on them. but given the age. I'd suggest replacing. Both are on factory original DID alloy rims; the rims are in great shape. Rear shock is still spring-y. The front brake lines were replaced with braided steel lines. pads are EBC's on the front and rear. The TRAC system up front still worked when I parked the bike. I rebuilt the forks in 2004 when it had just over 30k miles on it. All of the bushings and seals were replaced. and I cleaned out the junk that had accumulated in the TRAC system. so it worked pretty well. I don't know how well the fork seals held up; the bike has been parked for long enough that they may need replacing. but they were still ok when it was parked. Rear brake works well. Transmission shifts cleanly. though the clutch slave seal needs replacing. Chain and gears look ok.

Engine: Ah. yes. the V4. It was last run in 2011. New NGK plugs about 1000 miles ago. Rebuilt starter at about the same time. The infamous rear-cam oil starvation problem that affected these engines was taken care of with an aftermarket oiling kit that brings fresh. pressurized oil straight to the rear cams. From what I was told. it had that done when there was about 3k miles on the bike. It's a clean. professional job. using all stainless braided hoses. The engine runs strong and cool; pulls just like it should right up to redline. Air filter is a K&N reuseable. Carberators have K&N stage 1 kit jets installed. The floats and diaphragms were in good condition when it was parked. I rebuild all 4 carbs in 2004 after I had a float go bad and jetted it then. It made a little difference toward the high-end. but otherwise was unremarkable. Exhaust is stock; left-hand can has some rashing on the very tip from a tipover. Yeah. it dropped it a few times (and dropped it on me).

Electrical: Never had electrical trouble with the bike. The battery was new in 2005; it's dead as a doornail right now. but it might come back to life. It's a Yuasa. Headlight was replaced in 2005. Rectitifer is hardwired. thanks to Honda's infamous melting plug syndrome.

Documentation/etc: It comes with the factory service manual. factory setup manual. K&N jetting instructions and setup. Spare brake and shift levers. spare rear taillight. spare rear shock. I have the title in-hand; it's clean.

Every bike has a story. This one is no different. I got it back in 2002; it had changed hands a few times. but was in very good riding condition. I did a bunch of work on it in 2004-2005. but then. then came the wife. Now. most of you who know this story are nodding their heads. yeah. guy got married. wife told him to park the bike. he didn't want the fight. Well. not exactly. She got a bug about riding with me. and the pillion seat on this isn't great. so we purchased an Aprilia Futura instead. Best back-seat in the sport-touring world. though I think the electrical system on that bike was designed on the back of a napkin after a bottle of wine. Anyway. after we got the Aprilia. the Honda came out a few more times. but was then parked in a weatherproof. but not climate controlled. shed. And there. there's its sat for the past bunch of years. The last time I had it running was in 2011; after some coughing and complaining. it ran just as strongly has it ever did. I'm sure by now the carbs are pretty well fouled and need a rebuilding. as well as needing a new battery and tires. but other than that. it's good for who knows how many more miles. I could go futz with it for a bunch of hours and get it running again. but I just don't feel like doing another carb rebuild. We're replacing the shed in the near future. so I need to find a new home for the bike. Besides. bikes are for riding. not for hiding in sheds.

A word about the mileage: on the title. it has an "M" next to the mileage. stating that the State thinks that it has exceeded its mechanical limits and rolled around. Not so; I didn't realize when I had it re-titled in NJ that the clerk had just assumed a 30 year old bike could only have 30k miles on it. so he took it upon himself to add that "M". The 31k miles it has are original; it just wasn't ridden that much!

Local pickup only; I have no way to transport the bike any further than the street in front of my house. I can help you load it into whatever. though. Cash or Cashiers check at time of pickup. Please do feel free to ask any questions you may think of!
