I've had this bike since the late 1980's. and have had a lot of fun with it. and spent a lot of time and money on it. I have been riding it almost daily since I moved to Arizona in 1992. My fervor for motorcycling is waning. so it's time for someone else to care for and enjoy this bike. I'll try to cover the last 22 years of improvements without boring everyone to tears.
What was on the bike in 1988. believed to be original. and still there: Wheels. frame/swingarm/centerstand. handlebars + switches+gauges. brake and throttle cables. fenders. taillight. seat. engine from cylinders down. one exhaust pipe. all exhaust shields.
It was originally Poppy Yellow. I will retain the original gas tank. side covers. headlight ears and bucket. There are mild condition issues with them. Arrangements can be made for their purchase after the sale.
The present gas tank/cap was purchased NOS and is immaculate inside and out. The sidecovers came from the same source. used. but are somewhat faded. being original finish. I painted the headlight bucket and ears. and are not a perfect match to the tank or sidecovers. If you want to repaint everything a different color. I can supply another perfect gas tank with NOS cap that I painted (without perfect success) to match the original PY. I also have a pair of NOS headlight ears in the present (orange?) color that I got after having painted the present ones.
So. several options are available to you if you are not in love with the present livery of the bike. but like everything else.
A major improvement was the Bore-tech electronic ignition system. with new coils. wires. and terminals. Put it on in 2008 and haven't touched it since. The system itself was $360. The complete job p+l was over $600. but it was worth it. considering the performance improvement and all the fiddling it has saved since. I also bought new air filter boxes and the right (longer) exhaust pipe back when you could walk into a Honda dealer and do that. The left pipe has a little chrome deterioration on the inside curve of the pipe near the cylinder head. The muffler on that pipe never rusted. So the exhaust system on the bike is one of the best you will find.
The original cylinder head was damaged soon after I came to AZ by a trained monkey who cross-threaded a spark plug hole. It was repaired by a helicoil? which came out with the sparkplug 99% of the time. In 2007 a refurbished 1969 head and cams was installed. fixing the problem for good. The sparkplug hole threads are pristine. lubricated with anti-seize.
The carbs are also in perfect shape and tune after years of fettling. and searching for the proper needles and jets. The luggage rack is for an earlier model. so you have to remove it to open the seat all the way. Since I bought the Shorai battery. I have not had to. The seat pan is a bit rusty. but structurally sound. The frame. battery box. electrics. and top of the fender under the seat are not rusty. There is some paint damage on the swingarm in front of the wheel. I have not had the swingarm off the bike. or the steering neck. The fork legs were replaced after a rope damaged one of the lowers by rubbing during transport from Chicago to Phoenix in 1993. Over the years. I hand polished the fork lowers. wheel hubs. and engine side cases.
In 2012. a 34 tooth rear sprocket was installed along with new tires and tubes. The front sprocket may be a little bigger too. but memory fails me. So the bike has "longer legs" than stock. The chain is in fine shape. it may have been replaced at the same time. but I have a VERY thick folder of receipts to go thru.
So in summary. what we have here is a bike that has been maintained and improved constantly over the last 26 years. I have been honest in my description and have included as many details as space allows.
I can be reached at 480-628-1545 if you are serious about the bike and I was unclear about anything. I am in Mesa. AZ. The bike will not be released until I have cash in my hand. Thanks
