Description:

The CB1100R is a limited edition. homologation machine it was designed and built in the early 1980s for the sole purpose of dominating production class racing and remains arguably the best air cooled four Honda ever produced. The bike was built by Honda?ˆ™s legendary Race Service Centre (RSC) and was the closest it was possible to get to an over the counter factory race bike. The bike featured many exotic components. such as a hand welded alloy fuel tank. stronger frame and hand laid glassfibe fairing. the engine features forged. high compression pistons. performance cams and a sprinkling of magnesium components.

The CB1100R is undoubtedly a thoroughbred race machine but it also makes a fine road bike. limited numbers and their exotic nature has seen prices rise steeply in the recent past with a good example now commanding 5 figures sums.

This particular bike is one of the first RB models. just 1050 of this model were built. it is in need of work and some restoration. please read the full description for our assessment of the bike.

Cosmetic

Cosmetically this machine is in generally good order and appears to be largely original. The standard alloy tank has no dents or damage and is finished in the original Honda paint this is faded and worn in places and does have minor chips and marks. The side panels and seat unit is again original. with the original paint and decals including the RSC badges; on the right hand side there is a small crack and a scrape on the very rear of the tailpiece and some crazing of the gel coat on top. The right hand side panel has two cracks these can be seen in the photographs.

The rear mudguard is undamaged and clean also clean and in good order. the front guard is clean there is a break between the mounting points on the inside of the fork leg.

The seat cover is in good shape. the seat lock is present but we do not have the key and it is missing the actual catch. The exhaust system is in good order. there is a small dent on the right hand downpipe and the silencer is clearly not the original component. The wheels are both good there are some small marks as would be expected of a bike of this age but nothing significant.

Mechanical

We have not had the engine running. when the bike arrived we did spin it up in the starter and found that there was no spark on 2 of the four cylinders. investigation identified that one of the pickups has failed a straightforward fix and the parts are available. While we are able to say that the engine is free and turned over with no indication of mechanical issues clearly our testing is limited as we have not been able to run the bike.

Since that point the starter has stopped spinning there is no click from the solenoid so we believe this is an electrical issue the engine is definitely still free.

We have run a static check on the gearbox and all ratios select. the clutch is working but the plates are not separating. This is not unusual for a bike that has stood for a period of time. we see this regularly and if the bike can be run then most often the plates will separate.

Chassis

The chassis and cycle parts are in generally good order. as can be seen in the photographs. The frame and swinging arm appear to be finished in the original paint which is in good condition with minor chips and marks. On the suspension side the forks are clean and the seals are tight. we have not put any air into them. the action is smooth. The rear shocks are also clean and original fitment items.

The front brake is working. there is some wear on the discs. the rear disc is unserviceable and will need to be replaced the rear brake is not working. The bike retains its original air box assembly.

Electrical

This bike will need a new battery. the lights are working. there are no indicators fitted. The switch gear is missing the plastic know for the indicators but the metal mount is intact so it just needs a new plastic knob screwed back in place. The instruments are original equipment there is some damage to the rim of the rev counter as can be seen in the photograph. but otherwise they cosmetically clean.

Summary

While this CBR1100RB requires some work there can be few better ways to spend some winter evenings than returning a very rare and valuable piece of Honda exotica to the road. While we are not experts in these specific machines but it does appear largely original. there is a very enthusiastic owners club who can assist with information. this is a machine that will turn heads wherever it goes and beyond anything else this will be a real joy to ride.
