Description:
The Honda CB350 is an extraordinary machine. the performance figures are those that you might expect on the screaming two strokes of the era not an apparently mild mannered little Honda. This overhead cam parallel twin produced a claimed 36BHP from 325cc. equivalent to more 110 BHP per litre and red lined at 10. 00 rpm. The CB350 was not only powerful but it also had Honda?ˆ™s legendary reliability. this was reflected in the sales figures when in 1968 it was the world?ˆ™s best selling motorcycle. The popularity of these machines ensures that they are very practical classics with plenty of parts available.
This particular machine is cosmetically clean however it does need some attention. It is a very nice starting point for a winter project please read below for our assessment of the overall condition.
Cosmetic
Cosmetically this machine is in generally good order and is to be largely original. however close inspection does reveal some attention is needed. The tank is in good clean condition having been refinished in a factory style paint scheme and to a good standard. it has no dents or damage. the inside has been coated.
The side panels are refinished to match the tank and are undamaged with all lugs intact.
The rear mudguard is in good shape with just a very minor dink on the top left hand side this is barely noticeable. the chrome is clean although we believe it is original so it does have some age to it. The front mudguard does have some minor dents and a scrape on the front edge. it would be acceptable on a bike to be ridden and enjoyed but if the bike was to be fully restored then this would really require replacement.
The seat cover is in good shape aside from a split as it folds under the base on the rear left hand side. The base is poor although it is functional it has clearly split in the past and has been welded. We do not have the key to the seat lock.
The exhaust downpipes are in good order but the silencers both have welded repairs at the end. this is not a tidy job. The front wheel is clean. the chrome does have minor marks on close inspection. the rear wheel is in similar condition. When inspecting the bike we identified that the rear axle was not tight. however when we tightened it the wheel would not spin. we suspect that a spacer is missing although if so it is not obvious. so it could be incorrectly assembled or a bearing issue. this will need investigation and resolution before the bike could be ridden.
Mechanical
We have not had the engine running. when the bike arrived we did spin it up on the starter the engine turned over with no indication of any mechanical issues clearly our testing is limited as we have not been able to run the bike. Since that point the starter is now spinning but does not connect and turn the engine over the engine is free and turns over on the kick start and has good compression.
The choke mechanism is not working and in our experience with these machines the carburetors will almost certainly need to be cleaned through.
A static check on the gearbox has shown all ratios select.
Chassis
The chassis and cycle parts are in generally good order. as can be seen in the photographs. The frame and swinging arm have been refinished and the paint is in good order. the paint on the chain guard is flaking. The seat lock is present but we do not have a key. the steering lock is missing. On the suspension side the forks are clean and the action is smooth. The rear shocks are also clean and working well.
The front and rear brakes are working on a static check but the front will require adjustment and possibly shoes as the lever pulls back to the bars.
The bike retains its original air box assembly.
Electrical
The electrics will also need some investigation the ignition turns on and the headlight works on high and dip beam although dip beam lights with the switch in the off position. When the switch is put into the dip beam position the fuse blows. The rear light is not working. The horn works as do the indicators.
The switch gear is in good order. the instruments are clean we suspect that the faces have been replaced and we have not been able to test them.
Summary
This little CB350 is in cosmetically clean and in good order. it has the feel of a partially completed project with much of the hard and expensive work completed. The bike does still need work to restore it to road worthy condition and finish off the last of the cosmetic work such as the silencers. We are not able to offer a full assessment of the mechanical condition as we have not had the bike running but the engine is free and turns over with good compression. It will make an ideal project over the winter months and a great motorcycle to enjoy when the weather improves.
