Description:
In the late 1970s. rivalry was intense between the four major Japanese motorcycle manufacturers to produce the biggest and best superbike. Honda intended the CBX to restore its position at the forefront of motorcycle technology. The CBX was not the first production six-cylinder engine. that honour was stolen by the Benelli 750 Sei; the CBX was however the most technically advanced and the fastest. The 1979 Z model produced 105 horsepower at 9. 00 revs returning in an 11. 36 second quarter mile at 117. 95 mph. However to see the CBX as a pure muscle bike would be simplistic. the power delivery is silky smooth at three figure speeds. the handling remarkably precise for a machine of its size and the acceleration exhilarating.
Technical tour de force or symbol of ?ˆ?70s excess. whichever way you view the CBX. it is unarguable. that it is an iconic machine which has a well earned place as a truly classic motorcycle.
Cosmetic
The bike is a lovely take on a true Japanese classic. the fuel tank is in good condition with no dents. the bike has suffered some cosmetic damage to the paintwork during shipping. this is visible along the right hand side of the bike. it is visible in the pictures and unfortunately the tank has not escaped. The left hand side panel has a small crack on the bottom; the right hand panel is in good order again apart from some paint damage. The tail piece has a crack at the top of the rear number plate mount. The front mudguard is again in good undamaged condition with the exception of damage to the paint work.
The bike is fitted with an after market 6 into 1 exhaust system. this is in good order this is louder than a standard system although not offensively so and it has a pleasingly deep tone which sounds great.
The seat cover is an aftermarket item it has a small area of damage on the right hand side.
The original wheels are both very clean and in good clean condition.
Mechanical
We have had the engine fired up and taken the bike for a short test ride. the bike starts easily on the button. it is mechanically quiet with no signs of any issues. It revs cleanly and rides well. the clutch works as it should and the gears select easily and cleanly.
The engine cases are very clean with no sign of being dropped.
We are not aware of any faults in the drive train.
Chassis
The chassis and cycle parts are in very good condition as can be seen in the photographs. The frame and swinging are in good order. with just very minor chips and marks.
The front and rear brakes both work as they should. On the suspension side. the forks stanchions are clean. the seals tight. the action is smooth and the damping effective. the rear shock is clean and damping well.
The airbox is the original item and in good order.
The clocks are the original items and cosmetically clean. The speedometer is a KPH item it is not working this has been traced to the drive. the instrument is good. the trip meter knob is missing. the rev counter works well. The voltmeter has a broken needle and the instrument is not working.
Electrical
The ignition system is working well and we have fitted a new battery. The headlight is working on high and dip beam is out. the tail light is working. the brake light works well on both front and rear brakes.
The rear indicators are after market items and the indicators are not working. the warning lights light when the headlight is put on. the neutral light and oil warning lights work intermittently. these minor faults will need investigation but should prove a straightforward fix. The horn is working correctly. The original switch gear is fitted and in good order.
Summary
This is a very clean example of one of the most sought after and impressive classic 80s Japanese motorcycles. it has seen some light customisation which. as can be seen. suits the bike very well. although it could easily be returned to standard should that be the desire of the new owner.
This bike will need very little to get it through an MOT and return it to the road. just some minor faults attended to and we would recommend a service. Cosmetically the bike is clean and undamaged with the exception of some paint work damage on the right hand side caused during transport in the container; the paint will require refinishing either in the current scheme. an original paint scheme or to the design of the new owner.
This motorcycle is a very practical and usable motorcycle built to ride and enjoy.
Please review the pictures carefully they form an integral part of the description.
