Description:
Honda?ˆ™s XL500R was something of a revelation back in 1981. it was equipped with ProLink rear suspension. air adjustable 37mm front forks. The 498cc. 4 valve Over Head Cam engine has stump-pulling torque and dual counter balancers to smooth out the vibrations inherent in a big single. All in all this was a very capable and well appointed Enduro tool.
Cosmetic
Cosmetically this machine is very good condition especially for an Enduro machine. in our view this motorcycle has seen very few trips off road. The tank is in finished in its original paint with only minor marks. there are no dents or significant damage. similarly the side panels are the original items in good order and have no broken lugs.
The rear mudguard is undamaged and clean as is the front which retains its original Honda graphics.
The seat cover is the original item and has started to split through age on the right hand side just above and forward of the XL graphic.
The exhaust system is the original Honda fitment and is in great shape with no damage or signs of corrosion. The wheels are alloy rims and both are very clean and in good order.
Mechanical
We have had the engine fired up and taken the bike or a short test ride. while a big four stroke single is never the easiest engine to start it runs very well and is mechanically very quiet. The bike does not smoke when started or when revved and it pulls very well as you would expect of the big XLR.
The clutch works as it should and all gears select cleanly and easily.
The engine cases are very clean with no sign of accident damage and just some small wear marks on the original black paint.
We are not aware of any faults in the drive train.
Chassis
The chassis and cycle parts are in very good condition as can be seen in the photographs. The frame and swinging are in good order. the frame paint does have some minor chips and marks.
The front and rear brakes both work as they should although the rear brake springs are a little weak and the shoes have hardened and really require replacement. On the suspension side. the fork action is smooth and the damping effective. the rear shock is clean and damping well.
The airbox is the original item and in good order.
Electrical
The ignition system is working well. this bike is fitted with 12 volt electrics as standard. the battery is working. The headlight is working on high beam. dip beam is out. the tail light is working. the brake light works well on both front and rear brakes.
The left hand front indicator is not working but the rear lights. the right hand indicators work as they should. the rear indicators are mounted on rubber stalks these have hardened and split over the years this is purely cosmetic at this point but they will need replacement.
The original switch gear is fitted and in good order. the bike retains its original instruments which are cosmetically good and working correctly. the speedo is KPH.
Summary
This is a very clean and original example of classic 80s thumper with Honda build quality and reliability. as far as we are able to tell this machine is completely original. The bike has no significant damage to report just some very minor chips and marks as would be expected on any machine that had been ridden. it is exceptional for a 32 year old off road machine. The engine and drive train is working very well. with no obvious sign of any issues.
A couple of evenings in the shed for a service and to sort the indicator and dip beam which are most likely to be a couple of bulbs and the rear brake should see the bike road ready.
Please review the pictures carefully they form an integral part of the description.
