1983 CB1100F USA Model
I acquired this motorcycle circa 3 years ago in a very very sorry state. it had just been imported from Sacramento and the importer was going to break it or make an Endurance racer out of it. and to cut a very long story short I persuaded him not to break it & after a considerable amount of procrastination we eventually came to a mutually acceptable agreement & the bike was mine.
When it arrived by courier it was unloaded and wheeled into the garage. the Courier applied the front brake which had not withstood its test of time and duly snapped off in his hand! (This does not bear well methinks) added to this event were the copious words of discouragement / disbelief of my dear Wife who simultaneously was questioning my: a) Sanity & b) Parentage!
However:
Firstly … upon removing the side panel there was the original toolkit complete & never opened as well as the original Honda Owner’s Manual. hmmm looking a bit better now…
The bike had been in a joiners shop in California for 26 years and was covered in Sawdust wood chippings. I drained the oil. changed the filter. drained the carbs and tank. put fresh lube oil in Good Ol@ 20/50w . took the plugs out turned the motor in gear . circulated the oil replaced the plugs. put a battery in her. put fresh petrol in her and pressed the starter.
Two small coughs and she was up for it!
Sounding absolutely beautiful with a smooth deep tone 1980s Big Capacity Honda burble… FANTASTIC!.
Next was a compression test 158 psi all cylinders … its getting better!
Basically the bike was/is 98% original and was just dirty and neglected. even the chrome of the nuts and bolts cleaned up with a soft bronze brush and some Solvol the exhaust however did not stand the test of time and has been replaced by a Marving system which looks every millimetre as good as the original Honda item.
I spent the next two years putting new valve guide seals in . renewing the Cam Chain tensioners ( known weak spot on the big Hondas). uprating the original starter sprag assembly with the R6 mod. replacing the solenoid with an original Honda NOS item renewing the clutch basket rubbers ( thanks Wout). rebuilding the Anti-dive forks ( a trying experience ) ultrasonically cleaning the carbs. synchronising the carbs. powder coating the engine covers. re-chroming where necessary renewing the chain ( DID) new Battle-axe tyres. Paintwork by Lewis & Templeton. all powder coating by Triple S (CRACKING JOB !) etc etc etc the list is comprehensive to say the least !. There is a photographic record of the ground up restoration from day one and an A4 folder full of receipts for spares. Wherever possible NOS Honda spares/ items have been used in the restoration of this fine Motorcycle.
There is 10 months MOT on the bike
“ Why am I selling” . Too little time on my hands . too many projects. too many other interests that have taken over plus plus……
