Description

Offered for your consideration is my beautiful, are 1923 Indian Chief. I had hopes of giving her a full restoration but the reality of life is I have 5 Indians, '17 Excelsior and a '59 BMW in the restoration queue in front of her and it's probably going to be at least 7 more years before I can start on her. With that and my total lack of workshop and garage space I'm reluctantly going to have to part with her.
As anybody who knows Indians is well aware 20's Indians are few and far between and seldom come up for sale. Chiefs are even rarer than Scouts from the 20's so these are even tougher to find and more sought after. This particular bike was owned by a 90 years younggentleman for many years. He had started a restoration on it but ran out of enthusiasm. I had pestered him for years and years before he finally sold it to me. It was originally an export model that spent it's life in South America before he purchased it approximately 35 years ago and brought it to his home in Utah.
I've not ever tried tostart the engine, owever, t kicks through cleanly with great compression. It has the correct Splitdorf DU5H generator and HX 180 carb as well as the correct Splitdorf magneto. I have no idea if it sparks or not so if it does enjoy that as a bonus. And no, t doesn't have 1 mile on her. Ebay requires putting mileage in the ad but this old girl doesn't even have a speedometer so I have no clue.
There are a few really interesting modifications done to the motor worth noting. First is the amazing recirculating oil system that is driven from a modified oil pump. It uses the standard gravity feed from the oil tank but from there oil is pumped through to the valves, ig end bearings, tc then returned to the oil pump. It is amazing craftsmanship. That said if you want to convert it back to Indian's archaic oil system it is an easy change. Second, omebody in her lifemodified the primary cover to allow access to the clutch without removing the cover. It's pretty impressive work although I have no idea what the ultimate goal behind the modification was. More than a few Indian enthusiasts have openly wondered if it was something done at the factory to be able to use the engine as a test bed, ut I have no idea and whoever modified it is long gone from the earth so that's a mystery lost to time. I do have a spare, nmolested primary cover that will go with the bike. It's missing a few items but they are all easy to source so you won't have any issues completing the restoration.
I have a correct left hand Princess Sidecar for the bike that is available in a separate auction if you're interested. It has a canvas windshield, reat leather and all the attachments as well. Please feel free to view my other auctions to see it.
The sheet metal is in good condition, nd the inside of the tank looks nice and clean with only a small amount of crud that is easily cleaned out.
Now, own to the important stuff. Please, lease, lease don't bid if you don't plan on following through with your purchase. Selling a vehicle on Ebay is a legal contract. This is a92 year old bike, o no,she does not come with a warrantyand is anas-is where-is sale. Feel free to have the motorcycle inspected if you like. All sales are final, nd there are no refunds or returns. I am waiting for the title to arrive from the state, ut when she sells she will have a clear title. You as the buyer are responsible for shipping the bike to your home. Please look at all of the picturesand ask all questions before bidding as I will be happy to answer them.

I live less than a mile from the South Point Casino here in Las Vegas, here the annual Mecum antique bike auction takes place next month. You can be the proud new owner of a far better bike than what goes through the auction and not have to pay the buyer's premium.

I do reserve the right to end the auction early, s she is for sale through other venues and has several interested parties currently. There is a reserve on the bike, ut it is below what I paid for her. My loss is your gain! Whoever the lucky person is that is the new owner is going to love this rare, eautiful Indian. Thank you and happy bidding!
