1996 CMC/Indian (California Motorcycle Company) ONLY 20 OF THESE WERE BUILT PER YEAR-( see and hear on You tube by typing in "CMC/Indian motorcycle") or cut and paste here: http://youtu. be/WkBaQXAeYbU "Custom. and built by Owner Rey Sotelo-later to become president of Indian motorcycle company --custom attention to detail--Open primary. belt driven. Reverse springer one of a kind "DRAGON" front end. This bike will appreciate because it is a rare Indian motorcycle company owner hand built custom. It has a powerful 1450 cc 80 horsepower S+S superstock motor with a cam ( the same engine Rey used on the early Indians-before the faulty "bottlecap" engine was used and Rey didn't want any part of) and a strong chrome 6 speed transmission. Plenty of power. that's for sure . It has the old Indian classic feel and look to it and it floats when you ride it. You feel like you are riding a 1930's Indian. The soft tail frame and the solo seat feels like riding on a cloud. Here is a partial history of how Rey became the head of Indian and how CMC joined with Indian. however the strength of this motorcycle is on it being hand built and all attention is on it's custom features. Kind of like a hand built old piece of history . " By building a working prototype of a modern-day Indian and shipping it to Denver through a snowstorm. rolling it onto an elevator and driving it into an 11th-floor courtroom. Rey Sotelo joined the deal of what became the Indian/CMC of today. Sotelo. founder of Gilroy-based California Motorcycle Co. . created heavily accessorized. premium motorcycles for football players and other celebrities. They looked like Harley-Davidsons. but more over the top. Sotelo. 43. started running South County Motorcycles. a retail shop in Gilroy. 15 years ago. He started filling requests from customers to build complete bikes. Business grew mostly through word of mouth and he eventually sold the shop and became a full-time builder. founding California Motorcycle in 1995. Since then. he has built up the CMC brand as well as a line of celebrity bikes such as replicas of the Peter Fonda Captain America and even built a replica for Peter Fonda personally. . Another note I picked up in the study of the history of CMC is that CMC was the FIRST motorcycle manufactured in the United States when a duo of investors/engineers teamed up and chose CMC factory in California to start making motorcycles. just the same as Indian did. Apparently the CMC manufacturing company has had a really great reputation for motorcycle engineering and construction since the very beginning. Now this is really a piece of history as not that many were made when CMC was hand building these models. I do know that the head of the company( Rey Sotelo) was really headstrong about the quality of what went out of his shop==kind of like hand building the Rolls Royce. Same detailing and specific attention. I am too old now to enjoy this incredible machine and I want to see it not being driven daily. so I am selling her. An online search will show that most CMC's are selling for $20k at least. This is a piece of history for the serious collector. In future years it will be way up in the $100's of thousands-no doubt. The original Peter Fonda bike just sold for $1. 2 MILLION ! ! !
