Description

1950 INDIAN CHIEF Project - Runs Good - Original Sheet Metal - 80 c. i. - Matching Numbers

PARTS ADDED FROM PREVIOUS AUCTION - MOST OF THEM ORIGINAL GENUINE INDIAN

Good running Chief project. with matching numbers.  Indian Chief model 350 - 80 cubic inch. 1300 cc.  All original sheet metal.  Original paint under rear fender and backside of chainguard is light green. We have had this bike in our possession for a long time. at least 30. maybe 40 years or more. its a low mileage motorcycle.  The motor is very strong and sounds good. it was probably rebuilt in the 1960's or early 1970's.  I replaced bearings in both front and rear brake drums and put on a new sprocket on rear drum.  All gears work. Very good compression.  I cleaned and rebuilt the carburator - original M-350.  I also put new throttle and spark cables on and a new coil. and new grips.

The following is a list of parts that have been added since the previous auction:

ORIGINAL Genuine Indian Speedometer!  It was rebuilt years ago by Indian Motorcycle Supply in Illinois.

ORIGINAL Genuine Indian Fender Light. all original. has some pitting in chrome. older repro lens.

ORIGINAL Genuine Indian headlight. decent original chrome for the age. has a few dents and a few small cracks underneath. modern seal beam.

NEW repro taillight and license plate bracket.

ORIGINAL Genuine Indian Air Cleaner. needs some repair at the center hole. somebody worked on it a long time ago.  Some shinny original chrome still on it.

Front Fender Tip. I think is original Indian. the detail is really crisp.  Shinny chrome.  Some pits.

ORIGINAL Genuine Indian Horn Button Assembly & wire.  Wire needs lengthened.

ORIGINAL Genuine Indian Dimmer Switch - works. pitted. needs wires lengthened.

ORIGINAL Genuine Indian Rear Bumper that has been rechromed.

ORIGINAL Genuine Indian Front Brake Lever. needs rechromed.

ORIGINAL Genuine Indian Front Safety Bars.  Used. nice original chrome.  They were rewelded at one place. they need spiffed up.

I added a better old repro muffler than what was on the previous auction.  Someone else on another motorcycle blued the header pipe. I know how to set timing and the carburator.

Parts not in pictures - Front brake cable and I also have a complete buddy seat or chummy seat helper spring set up assembly to add to the parts.

It is missing some parts but all are available.  fender trim. tool box. generator & bracket & beltguard. horn. speedo drive cable. stoplight switch. gas line and I'm sure some other small things.

Another thing about this Indian. this is not a pile of parts that somebody threw together and is calling a motorcycle.  This was an almost intact bike that has been in our shop. like I said for 30-40 years.  I has not been messed with or played with or taken apart and put back together by someone that has no clue what an Indian really is.  I tore the sheet metal off several years ago when I thought it was going to be sold. the sheet metal was cleaned up. primed and painted. but not professionally.  The deal never materialized.  So after it was sitting with the sheet metal off of it for some time. I finally put the sheet metal and the wheels back on it and did the other work that I mentioned above.  This is not a cobbled together parts bike.  I said above that this was a low mileage bike. the reason I say this is because nothing is worn. brake rods aren't worn. brake pedal hole not worn. shifter lever hole not worn. shifter rod and bellcrank not worn.  I didn't see any broken fins on the motor.  The average high mileage wear that you normally see on these machines isn't evident.

To validate my credibility for those of you that do not know me or our business. by father started racing Indians. then opened an Indian dealership. followed by Matchless and Indian Enfield. then was one of the first Honda dealers in the US.  I started working on bikes in our family business no later than age 12. restoring my first 1936 Indian Chief when I was 15 and 16 (1970/71). this has been my profession ever since.  I was a judge for the AMCA for 35 years seven of which I served as Assistant Chief Judge.  I am the Chief Judge of the Indian Four Cylinder Club of America and I have been a judge at several of the Concours d'Elegance shows.  I rode to Daytona in February a dozen or so years on Indians. rode out to Tiffin Ohio for the Indian Four meet over 30 years on mostly Indian fours. used to ride to the AMCA meets until we started vending in the 80's. and rode up to Springfield. MA many times for the Indian Come Home Rally. and many other places.  An important part of my riding has also been test riding hundreds of customer machines through the years. an education in itself.  Even though our dealership changed to dealing in Hondas. we never stopped service work and restorations on the Indians. we worked on many of the local Indian riders bikes for many years. but that changed to worldwide as Indians became more scarce.  Ok. I've said enough. maybe too much.  LOL.  Please check out our new website for more info. it should be up (maybe not finished) the last week of the year - bobsindian.    If you don't see the slide show on the first page. then you've gotten the old site. just try back later in the week.
