Description

1976 Kawasaki KZ900 LTD Z1 Powered 1015 Big Bore Mikuni RS34 Race Carbs, MAC 4-1 Exhaust

This is a SERIOUSLY FUN bike to ride. Loads of power yet can cruise the strip at night near idle.

This motorcycle came to us in a package of old school bikes we recently bought for our new custom bike program. BUT…. This is one machine needing no customization and I personal feel it needs to remain in its current near stock configuration. When performing your due diligence on this particular 76 KZ LTD…. You will find it truly was a Limited Addition (somewhere between 2000 – 5000 bikes – nobody knows for sure) but more importantly, the historical significance of this machine even outweighs its limited numbers. The 76 KZ900 LTD was the VERY FIRST Japanese motorcycle to break the Universal Japanese Motorcycle mold.

As you can see, this KZ has a cruiser style setup yet encompasses the famous Z1 engine of its time. It came stock with dual front disc brakes, a rear disc brake and far more appealing style than anything before. What you see here….. is actually the very first Japanese crotch rocket and every sportbike today owes its linage to this particular bike.

Okay, I am done with the boring stuff….. here is what you have in this machine.

1976 KZ900 LTD bearing VIN: KZ900B-502393 <--- authentic LTD being the 2, 93 LTD produced in Nebraska.

Z1 900 motor with VIN: Z1E-120211 (all the LTD’s used Z1 engines, hence no matching numbers) with a Big Bore Kit at 1015cc with a very streetable 10:1 compression ratio. To further enhance this engine, Mikuni RS34-D21-K race carbs were installed and we JUST added BRAND NEW MATCHING K&N filters. (It came with too small of a sized cone filters). And, to get all this extra air/fuel mixture out the back, a MAC 4 into 1 exhaust is in place.

To make this great KZ run even better, its old points and condenser ignition had been replaced and a Dyna DS2-1 electronic ignition coupled to Dyna Coils and 8mm wires. This bike runs…. Spot on. Never a hiccup, no lags, no nothing, although a bit cold blooded at first. When you roll on the throttle, it goes! See the video.

Clean, Clear, Fresh WV Title in My Name. Ready to go….

How it arrived here:

It arrived here in excellent condition and completely rideable. The person whom owned this collection of bikes actually had this KZ plated and rode it occasionally. He had to remove his current plate before it was loaded into our trailer.

BUT…. I am a freak when it comes to riding anything down the road at speed. I went through the bike one afternoon, slapped my plate on and went riding. This is a sweet, fun running bike. It actually pains me to sell it.

It arrived here with:

Big Bore Kit

Mikunis

Exhaust

Fender eliminator light taillight relocator

VERY LOW PROFILE cateye turn signals. Which I really like and remain.

Pingle – Rearsets (Actually more like footrests. I didn’t think I’d like them but they are very roomy and suit the era of this bike.

Pingle - Engine Mounts - Aluminum

Pingle – Petcock – SMOOTH and easy to operate. Great upgrade.

Handlebar - Old School Superbike Bars. Again, very comfortable and appropriate upgrade.

Mirrors – Aftermarket, Cool and Appropriate.

Nice Foam Grips.

Repainted Classic Red w/an ultra subtle blue pearl clear. The pearl is so subtle, I didn’t see it for more than a few days. It looks great over the red. Nice touch by whomever did the paint. The tank’s internal has been coated at some point in time. I suspect many, many years ago.

Has Original Owner's Manual and the person who performed most of the upgrades noted various records within. Such as upgrades, dates, mileage, maintenance, etc.... from around 4000 miles through 13000 miles. He obviously LOVED this bike. All this goes with the bike of course. PLUS... all my own records of what was performed and its current maintenance activity.

And overall how you see it here, is how it arrived.

What we did to it though……….. now that’s a list. Here it is:

I went through this bike front to back.

New EBC Front Brake Pads

New EBC Rear Brake Pads

Flushed Front/Rear Brake Systems and Refilled with New DOT4

..... at this point I rode it for a few hundred miles to see what was what........ Then:

Fresh Oil and Filter – Valvoline 4T Synthetic with a WIC Filter and O-rings

Brand New K&N Matched Air Filters with K&N Filter Oil

Brand New K&N Crankcase Breather Filter – Had some cheesy looking thing.

Exhaust: Header – Was looking a touch shabby. We sand blasted it and ceramic coated it with Cerakote High Temp Black Velvet. This bike came with ONLY an exhaust turnout tip installed. WAY too loud!!! We installed a Brand New MAC Baffle. Still nice n loud…. just not too loud. If you need to quiet it down more, add packing and that will help. It is currently empty. And of course, new header gaskets and stainless washers and nuts.

Rear Shocks – I am a suspension freak since we live in Roads-from-hell West Virginia (see video). I took the springs off to insure the shocks dampening action was working……… and it is!!! While apart, the bodies and springs were blasted and Cerakoted Black Velvet also. Ties the color scheme together with the exhaust.

Front Forks – Removed, flushed and refilled with Motorex 7.5wt. Should smooth the front out just right.

Rear Braking System – Since it was a little ratty looking, removed the master and slave for blasting and cerakoted.

New Tires – Bridgestone Spitfire S11 front and back. YOU will be the one to scrub them in.

New Valve Stems – New tires means new valve stems of course.

Anomolies and Not-so-goods:

The tank has a few very minor dings as shown in the photos. It looks exactly like another bike tipped over onto it. Look at the pattern. It was hard to photograph correctly.

The 40 year old frame, triple clamp, controls, etc… paint has some wear chips here and there. Nothing crazy but this upcoming winter, I personally would touch them up. No real issues actually. The bike has 4 decades of character. It attracts a LOT of attention at bike nights, etc…. Everyone thinks its in beautiful condition.

Overall…… this KZ has been gone through front to back and is very well sorted out and needs NOTHING! Since the motor runs so well, we never touched it as it does not need any work whatsoever.

See my YouTube video and you will find this bike can go from putting through the neighborhood to screamin through the twisties. It is a RUNNER to say the least. And I run sportbikes at race tracks. This bike RUNS!!! Most importantly though, it’s a boatload of fun to ride. You can take it to work through the week, head off with your riding buds on Saturday for serious jousting and then click up the rear shocks a notch or two and take your favorite passenger for a Sunday cruise.
