Description

Up for auction is a very well preserved 1979 Kawasaki KZ1000-B3 LTD with low miles. Those of you who grew up in the '70's remember that the KZ1000's were the terrors of the boulevard and the LTD was the stylish factory cruiser version of the KZ1000 offered by Kawasaki. If you recall, he 1979 model was the last LTD model with a speedometer that read 160 miles per hour. From there on, he dreaded '80's came with smogger bikes and lower performance. When I was a teenager, he 1979 LTD was my dream bike. I bought this bike on eBay about 10 years ago and rode it very conservatively. I think I put approximately 6,000 miles on it since I purchased it. A few years ago, experienced some health issues and was forced to park the bike. It has sat in storage since until this summer when I decided it was time to sell. I have too much going on and far too many other motorcycles in my collection to give this bike the attention that it deserves. It is time to find it a new home.
Now for the good: It has never been outside in the weather. I have always kept it in a climate controlled garage. It has had regular seasonal maintenance when I was riding it and suffers no damage history. The engine ran very strong up to the day I parked it. The transmission and clutch worked flawlessly with every shift. All electrical worked perfectly before it was parked. I did buy a new battery for it recently and all electrical works great. Electric start fired up the engine with no problems recently. The inside of the gas tank was coated with Dameon RedCoat a few years ago and is fairly clean in spite of sitting for a few years. Tires not rotted but they do have some miles on them. Front tire is good. The back tire is fair. Sprockets are in good shape. Disk brakes are good. The bike does have a 4-in-1 Vance & Hines header pipe on it. However, do have the factory twin LTD exhaust pipes that will go with the bike if the new owner wants them. While they are not dented or bent, hey will need to be rechromed since the chrome is pealing off. Also for you LTD buffs out there, our keen eye will notice that there is a center stand on this bike (see pictures). The factory LTD did not come with a center stand due to interference with the LTD dual exhaust configuration. So, ust remember, f you have plans to restore this bike to original factory condition, he center stand must go if you want to run the factory twin exhaust. The stand simply unbolts.
Now for the "needs work" category, ere are the known issues with this bike:

  • The bike sat for about 3 years. The bike will start and run but only while applying full choke. The bike does not idle and dies unless the choke is on. The engine does not run smoothly due to the carb issues. So, xpect to spend time cleaning and rebuilding the carburetors.
  • The rear brake master cylinder is leaking and will need to be rebuilt. Otherwise, he brake disks and calipers are in good shape.
  • The seat cover is separating at the seams. So, ou might plan to have a new seat cover installed.
  • The rear tire is fair, ut I would plan on putting a new tire on before riding it regularly.
  • Paint overall is good but do expect some blemishes. Some small chips. The tank paint is great. Inside of tank is fairly clean. Side covers are really good. Badges are good. Overall, he frame finish is fairly good but there are some places where the finish is blemished. Don't expect perfection from a 36 year old machine.
  • Header exhaust is blued.
  • I have decided to sell this bike and a few others that I own since I have been riding less and less each year and can no longer justify the expense and effort of maintaining them as I get older. I just have too much going on with no time to spare. So, omeone will get a great opportunity to take over ownership of a truly fine machine.
