Description

I bought this bike as a winter project and also because I was curious about the performance and economy of a 250 but didn't want to spend much money finding out!  The bike had been standing for 6 years previously. however it had an MOT until late Feb 2015 and has only 25644 miles on the clock.

So I serviced the engine and put on a fresh pair of tires then took it out for a spin a few times.   Although she performs well. especially when rev'd to the 14K limit. I am just too old and fat for such a small bike. I am much more used to bikes with more grunt - oh well. lesson learnt.

The bike is in fair condition with good body and paintwork so you just might make a decent profit if you were to buy it and sell it for spares.

If you want to use it as a main bike there are a few things I would suggest you do (although I am no mechanic).

The main thing is that the carbs could do with a good overhaul.   This is because the throttle return at idle is slow and the tickover could be smoother.   Everything works OK when on the move though.

I noticed a bit of clutch slip between 6-8K rpm in first gear on a couple of occasions.   There is no slip on full throttle in top gear so I don't know if it requires clutch adjustment or replacement.

Over the next few months I would keep an eye out for exhaust downpipes because they are quite rusted and have had a minor repair already.   There are plenty of spare used and new parts for these bikes on the web. It may also benefit from the valve clearances being checked/adjusted.

The fuel tap loses a few drops of fuel when the position is moved. although this is not a problem because I just leave it in the ON position.  I noticed that repair kits on ebay cost about ??15.

Cosmetically the only thing that needs doing is the front indicators are cracked and their stem baseplates need renewing.

That's about it.   If I could put up with the lack of grunt. then this would be a good winter hack or commute. and with time and a bit of money it could be a sound motorcycle.
