Description

This restored Z1a is not for the 100% genuine obsessive collector. but for those that want a tidy. useable. 1970's bike. This bike has a re-stamped frame number. which I have been informed by one of the top Z1  parts seller/restorers is what the DVLA used to do to stolen/recovered bikes back in the 1980's. I purchased this bike in 2012 as a project (original purchase condition of bike in photo 11) I totally stripped the bike and sent the frame away for powder coating.  The frame is braced. as was popular back in the day.  Bodywork was sent away for painting in the original green livery. The cylinder head and barrels were sent to an engineering firm to be checked over.  Valve guides were measured and ok and valve seats recut. head skimmed.  Barrels checked found to be fine. just honed.  Pistons were fitted with new rings. which are. by the way. 72mm.  Crank was judged to be fine. Picture 7 shows fin damage which i sadly missed until it was to late or i would have had it repaired. Before engine reassembly the crank cases. barrel and head were sympathetically glass bead blasted. It has a set of reconditioned carbs from "wiredgeorge" in the USA (www. wgcarbs. com) with new foam pod filters fitted (an air box cannot be fitted due to frame bracing). New Boyer Bransden electronic ignition fitted.  A new Harris exhaust fitted with race baffle. Wheels have Akront aluminium rims. new Bridgestone Battlax on front and nearly new Battlax on rear.  I believe the swinging arm to be Mechamex. another period modification.  The front forks are Z900 which were on at purchase and I have never managed to find original Z1 fork bottoms.  Front brake calipers rebuilt professionally.  new period brake pipes and new master cylinder. Original rear mud guard re-chromed as were front cable guides.  Front mud guard is new from Z Power.  New rear shocks also from Z Power.  New seat and catch mechanism.  New high handlebars. It has a new wiring harness fitted. retaining as much of original electric panel as possible and a new regulator rectifier.  Old rectifier left purely for aesthetics.  New indicators and stalks. new handlebar switches and a Period Cibie headlamp. The only problem i know of is the throttle doesn't always drop of straight away but i can't find a air leak. running with just a pull cable as suggested by WG carbs but still does it sometimes.  Numerous other new bits and bobs The seat on first picture is not with it . ow fitted with seat in picture no4.
