Description

I purchased this motorcycle about 2 years ago from a fellow club member with the intention of using it for local. one-day. trials. At the time of purchase there was a slight problem with the clutch hydraulics but the fitment of a new master-cylinder and new slave-cylinder seals appears to have solved the problem. (I say "appears" as I have been unable to put the machine to any proper use - please read on!) With other projects taking up time the machine stood idle for some while and by the time I had sorted it properly a knee injury precluded me entering it in events as the 8. 2:1 compression ratio and short kickstart lever put too much pressure on the injured knee. As it appears unlikely I will get to use it I have now decided that I need to move this bike on. It is not road-registered and I have no original paperwork for it but believe it to be a 1997 model and that it was bought by the previous owner's son who used it in club trials before selling it to his Dad. from whom I purchased it. The original manufacturers' identification number plates on both the frame and the engine are in place. intact and clearly just as they would have been when stamped at the factory. there being no evidence whatsoever of having been tampered with. Being an off-road bike it is not in concours condition and bears all the minor scars that one would expect of such a machine; (the left-hand handlebar grip is missing about 20mm of rubber from the very end of the 'bar. ) Having said that there is no apparent damage to any of the plastics. frame. engine or seat and I believe it to be a 'genuine' machine. The difficulty in buying and selling a bike not registered for the road is that one needs an off-road area in which to run it properly in order to properly check it out but from riding it up and down my driveway I can find no serious faults. the engine starts and runs easily. the gears all engage. the brakes and suspension work well; the tyres are in good condition. as are the 'Akront' alloy rims. As covered in the "Condition Description" field above the clutch has a tendency to 'drag' when the engine is first started from cold. though this appears to clear itself as the engine warms. It is possible that this is simply through lack of use and that all it requires is a good 'workout'! The oil on the exhaust mentioned also above is simply residue from my attempt to clean out the silencer. When purchased the (aluminium) silencer had 'spread' slightly where the main exhaust-pipe enters. presumably through use. and I removed the silencer to panel-beat it back into shape and ensure a proper fit. Whilst off the bike I decided to try and clean out the remains of two-stroke oil and carbon that had accumulated but I was unable to remove the end-plate without damaging the whole exhaust. so put degreasing fluid into it and allowed it to soak. before flushing it out. This certainly cleaned it out well but the downside was that some residue remains and. in common with the other items mentioned above. will certainly clear once used 'properly'. The Montesa is sold with a manufacturers' workshop manual. a spare clutch master cylinder and a road-lighting kit. I can deliver the bike in the south east of England at cost of diesel fuel. subject to negotiation with the purchaser and the 'pump' price of diesel at that time. On present values this would equate to approximately 15 pence per mile.
