1970 NORTON MERCURY 650SS DOMINATOR FEATHERBED CLASSIC BRITISH TWIN MOTORCYCLE

Offered for your consideration is this 1970 Norton 650SS Mercury. Being sold with a clear California Title. Frame, earbox and Engine Numbers match, he Frame is stamped as well as there being a plate riveted to the Frame with the matching number. The Mercury was produced during the month of December 1968 and the 750 models manufactured were sold as 1969 or 1970 models. Most of the 750 came to the Untied State with approximately 100 staying in the UK as well as 100 to the Home Markets. It has been said that this bike was a "parts bin" bike built to use up stocks of Featherbed Frames and 650SS Engines but this is simply not the case. The Mercury was built with a Commando Cylinder Head Casting with a specially modified combustion chamber for 650cc. It also differs form the earlier 650cc Dominators with the upgrade of 12-Volt Electrics, oints/Coil Ignition, ingle Amal Concentric Carburetor, ll the Oiling and Head improvements, ouble-start Oil Pump, tronger Rocker Spindle supports, etter Head Gasket system. The Engine starts easily and runs very well with no unusual noises or smoke as you can see in the video, o broken Fins on the Cylinder or Head. Also the bike seems very oil tight. Mileage is now 5332 which the previous owner clams to be genuine, ut I cannot guarantee this. The previous owner decided to change the color of the bike to the combination of Signal Red on the Rear Fender and Petrol Tank with a Chrome Front Fender. From the Factory the Mercuries were finished with Silver Petrol Tanks with Blue Oil Tank and Battery Box, haincase, hainguard and Fenders. The Front Fender has suffered from some corrosion but still shines brightly, imilar story with the Dunlop Wheel Rims. Front Forks operate well as do the Rear Shocks. Avon tire on the front and Dunlop rear are both 20+ years old and will need replacing for the street. Still has Points Ignition. Petrol tank appears to have had a repair on the lower front side as seen in the photos below. All electrics function including the lights and horn as well as the charging system, alogen headlamp unit aftermarket Tail Lamp Lens. Transmission and Clutch feel excellent, very smooth shifting bike. Brakes perform ok, he front would benefit from the upgrade to the Twin Leading Shoe which easily replaces the existing Brake Plate with no modification.. Exhaust system is original and the Drive Side has seen contact worth the pavement and has the scuffs to prove it. The previous owner modified the rear Fender Stay to carry some luggage whilst touring in 1997. Missing the under tank reflectors. Both Smiths Instruments are present, he Speedometer works great although the Tachometer Drive is missing from the Timing Cover so the Tach is currently there but non-operational. Under the seat is the Tool Tray. Seat appears to have the original Vinyl with no rips or holes. Frame and Cycle Parts Paint is original and worn in places. Still retains the Tyre Pump on the Frame Hooks under the Tank. A very usable classic, lenty of power and reliability make this Norton a great all rounder. Superb handling from the world famous Featherbed Frame and Roadholder Forks as well as a powerful 650 Twin Cylinder Engine that gives a great smooth return, ittle vibration unlike the larger 750 Atlas Twins. All this and the fact that you cannot go wrong with such a machine made in so low numbers. Described as the last but best of the Featherbed Dominators . A nice clean good riding honest original bike that presents itself very well albeit with general wear and tear, deal to ride as is or a great candidate for a 100 point restoration. Either that or fit some Ace Bars, ear Sets, wept Back Pipes and you will have a very cool Cafe Racer. Currently has a non-operation status with the DMV, ot registered since 1998.
