Description

1972 Norton 750 Commando Matching numbers fitted with original Paul Dunstall fiberglass tank fairing and seat in addition to the original roadster tank. seat. foot pegs. signals. chrome fender and chrome headlight bucket as well as a Production Racer seat from Norvil in the UK. I purchased the bike 500 miles after a complete rebuild and restoration. then found the Dunstall kit and purchased it complete with rear sets and clip-ons. The original Norton Roadster tank. seat. etc are all packed in boxes and are in perfect condition. I installed the Dunstall kit and was not pleased with the square shape of the Dunstall double seat and I ordered a Production Racer seat from Norvil. The Dunstall fairing dash has ?ˆ?Dunstall?ˆ? molded into the area just below the gauges. not a cheap reproduction but actual Dunstall fiberglass. All these parts are included enabling one to keep the single seat production racer or put it back to the roadster. The bike is fitted with Hagen shocks. a steering dampener. AGM battery with connection for a battery maintainer. bar end mirrors and electronic ignition.

In the past years I have put another 400 miles on her and other than that she has lived in my automotive restoration shop covered with a cotton sheet and has been started monthly and ridden at least a mile each month to keep everything in good working order. Everything works. starts first or second kick. no smoke and runs like a dream on the road. Last year one of the guys in the shop accidentally put ethylated gas in the tank which began to soften the glass. The tank was removed. repaired and repainted after coating the inside with three passes of Caswell fuel tank epoxy coating. stickers were replaced and clear coat applied over the tank with the stickers in place. petcocks were also replaced at this time.

This is a vintage Norton with 18. 48 showing on the clock. it was rebuilt in San Francisco at 17. 00. If she sits for more than three weeks she will wet sump and drip a little oil. Everyone tells me that this is just how they are and there is an ?ˆ?Anti-drain valve?ˆ? which can be installed as Norton did on the MK III bikes ?ˆ“ I never bothered. Another Norton bit of ?ˆ?Character?ˆ? is that you must be sure that the kickstart is at the top of its stroke before turning the ignition on. attempting to kick it over through only half the stroke can result in the kick starter kicking you back. which can hurt.

Beautiful bike and a real head turner. rumbles at idle and runs out beautifully. shift is of course on the right side and upside down in pattern as was the custom on old English bikes. Brakes work beautifully and the front brake drum is a work of art. Tires are in good shape although some cracks have begun to appear on the rear tire. Chain has 1000 miles on it. Draws a crowd everywhere and I have taken to telling people that I don?ˆ™t know anything about it and borrowed it from a friend. If you are going to ride this bike regularly I suggest having some cards printed up with the details and having them ready to hand out.

Bike is sold ?ˆ?as is?ˆ? and I can arrange to show it with 24 hours notice. $500. 00 due within 24 hours of auction end. balance due within 3 days by wire transfer or in person. Can assist in making shipping arrangements including pick up from a commercial location. Shipping is of course. at buyers expense.

On Oct-06-14 at 09:33:30 PDT. seller added the following information:

There were fewer than 150 factory Norton Production Racers produced by hand at the Thruxton Race Shop. these were campaigned by Norton and sold to independent race teams with few of them racing and even fewer surviving. The last production racer was produced in 1971. English Tuner Paul Dunstall began hand making the fiberglass bodywork and tanks which were then sold to independent racers who then tuned their Commandos and outfitted them with Dunstall body work. these made up the vast majority of all the Production Racer bikes which were actually raced. If you had a Norton Commando in 1972 and wanted to race it you bought Dunstall bodywork. rear sets. clip on?ˆ™s. steering dampener. etc and put it on your Commando and raced it- this is exactly what we have here. all period. all correct.
