Description.

This handsome motorcycle was one of the final Norton’s built at their factory on Bracebridge Street. Birmingham before it was closed by the parent company. AMC in 1963. The Atlas was Norton’s first 750cc model introduced as an export only machine in 1962. before being made available to the home market in 1964. The Atlas was originally sold in a mild state of tune. a contemporary test achieved 119 mph and a standing quarter in 14. 5 seconds. while these figures are largely meaningless in a classic motorcycle. it does illustrate that the Atlas makes for a very practical and usable machine.

This particular machine is a matching numbers built. our research indicates a build date of around September / October 1962; it is largely very original with only a couple of small changes made by previous keepers over the years. This bike is very clean cosmetically and mechanically it starts and runs very well. a full assessment of condition is provided below.

The tank is still finished in the original factory paint. it does have some minor marks but really is in extraordinary condition given that it is over 50 years old. there are no dents or other damage. The oil tank and side panels are also finished in the original paint and both are in good undamaged condition. The mudguards are not correct for this model. the originals would have been chromed but have a slightly deeper valance. The front guard is stainless and is in good order. the rear is a chrome item and as can be seen from the photographs this is showing its age. while solid there is surface rust and the chrome is peeling. Parts for the Atlas are readily available. a pair of original specification mudguards are available for less than ?200.

The exhausts are also showing their age. the down pipes are poor and both have some welded repairs. they will need replacement. a search on eBay shows they are available for ?40 or ?100 for a top quality UK made pair. The left hand silencer is scraped and both have some surface rust in the original chrome which is starting to look a little tired. The wheel rims are original. the chrome is showing its age and they do have surface rust.

The frame is clean and in good order. there is some damage on the lock stops this has been resolved by an aluminium plate. it works well and is a neat solution but the new owner may wish to do a more original repair. The forks are in good order. the action is smooth and damping effective. the rear shock absorbers are new replacement items and working well. The brakes are both working effectively on a static check. The seat base we believe to be the original item but it has been changed to add the rear hump to give the bike a more sporting appearance.

The engine starts and runs well with no untoward noises or indication of mechanical issues. oil is returning to the tank well and it will just need a recommissioning service. The bike has been fitted with electronic ignition. a sensible upgrade from standard. the original distributor cap has been removed obviously. the cap is now replaced by a cut down tin can. it sounds shoddy but the can has been sprayed up and it is actually a pretty neat solution and far from obvious at first glance. On a static check the gears select cleanly with no indication of any issues.

We are not aware of any issues in the drive train.

We originally believed that the bike should have twin instruments with a rev counter fitted. however some research has shown that the headlamp mounted speedo is correct. The headlight and tail lights work. dip beam is out high beam works correctly.

In summary this a very nice example of a very early Norton Atlas it is in largely original condition. and would require very little effort to return it to the road. after that it is really just down to the new owner as to whether they want to reverse the few changes that have been made over the years. What would be a shame is to do a full restoration. in my opinion. as there are very few bikes of this age left in this condition.
